Review summary

Disappointed not to have visited Sardinia but understand weather made this not possible. We enjoyed the convenience of not flying but of course this added to the number of sea days and overall we had four days of dull or bad weather. Surprised that during the periods of adverse sea conditions the ship moved more than expected for its size. Although we weren't sick as such it was uncomfortable at times particularly over prolonged period - 24 hours at one point. Ventura is a good ship with a good crew and really would have no hesitation with cruising on her again.

Embarkation

1 out of 5
Absolute farce, G4S staff who were responsible for check in etc were rude and unhelpful. Didn't see the point of being given an embarkation time as this was completely ignored.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Our main dining room was excellent, swiftly seated every night and couldn't fault the food or service. My daughter who is vegetarian was given menus in advance so that she could pick her courses a day early. The Sindhi restaurant was also excellent and well worth the additional charge. We use the buffet for breakfasts and late lunch and apart from the first couple of days when choice was limited and it was chaotically busy was good, hence the dropped star.

Onboard Activities

4 out of 5
We didn't really take part but if we had the choice was varied.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Varied entertainment, house bands were good , 'headliner' was Bernie Flint who although again was good I imagine would be unknown to around half the people on the ship.

Children's Programs

No children.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Staff ranged from indifferent to excellent service. Our cabin steward was excellent, service in some of the bars was slow at times particularly The Exchange.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Although a little tired in places every area was kept spotlessly clean. Layout on the upper decks, 15 to 17 was confusing spent some time walking around in circles. Experienced some rough weather for a couple of days and quite surprised by how much the ship moved having beenled to believe that a ship of this size would cope better in adverse weather conditions.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Thoroughly pleased with our cabin, plenty of space and good size balcony for us both to sit out.

Ship tip

Get your bearings early, particularly around the upper decks.

Ports of call

Southampton (London), England Did not visit port

Cadiz (Spain)

4 out of 5
Short walk into town and busy with shops and bars.

Barcelona, Spain

5 out of 5
A great city and would be worth a longer visit in its own right. We went to FC Barcelona for a tour of the stadium and thoroughly enjoyed it and the tour was unexpectedly combined with an hour or so of sightseeing afterwards with a very good guide.

Cannes, France

5 out of 5
Landed by efficient tender service. Quite an eye opener with regard to shops, cars, people etc. Very expensive though.

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

4 out of 5
My wife and daughter went on a guided tour to Rome - private rail journey there and back and again - and again this deserves a visit on its own. I enjoyed a leisurely walk around the town itself which has its own character as a typical working Italian town.

Naples, Italy

5 out of 5
Family went to Pompeii on an excellent guided tour. I went for a walk around Naples and was blown away by the combination of big Italian city combined with the numerous narrow streets off the main thoroughfare bustling with people and mopeds.

Cagliari, Sardinia Did not visit port

Adverse weather meant we couldn't dock.

Gibraltar (U.K.)

4 out of 5
A strange place that doesn't appear to know whether it's British or Spanish regardless of the hundreds of Union Jacks everywhere. Very cheap duty free prices for booze and fags available at the terminal or tens of shops in the main shopping street.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Quick and easy, no customs or immigration.

Glad your overall experience was positive in spite of bad weather and rough seas.

we love the ventura and have sailed on her a couple of times suprised to hear about the movement as we had a force 8 across the bay of biscay and she handled it quite well. i think some ppl just feel it more than others. i agree the about the crew and have always found them helpful and friendly
