Review summary

We chose this cruise for the itinerary, which was great. We had heard so much about Seabourn but were frankly underwhelmed. Which the ship, staff, service, food, etc. were all quite good, none was especially better than other cruise lines we have sailed with, and the price was MUCH higher. I therefore would not consider it to be good value for the money spent. And when I factor in the complete FIASCO that was the tour to Marrakesh and the total lack of ANY real caring or taking responsibility on the part of Seabourn, I have to say that I would be unlikely to ever sail on Seabourn again - it would just bring back unhappy memories to even consider it. Thus please take the "average" of 4.0 stars that Seabourn computes for this review to be ridiculously incorrect, and far too high, because one unacceptable disaster cannot be made up for by good results in other areas. Overall, I rate this cruise to be one star at best, and I was expecting SO MUCH MORE! Caveat cruisers!

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Quick and easy, stateroom available immediately

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Food was consistently good, but not as good as I had heard it would be

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Nothing specially interested me

Entertainment

5 out of 5
Singers and dancers were GREAT. Pianist was SUPERB. Everything else was nothing special.

Children's Programs

Have no children.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Service was generally quite good, but not stellar.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Everything was ship-shape, but didn't feel especially luxurious.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Loved the size and layout of the cabin. One of the better ones I have stayed in during 20 years of frequent cruising.

Ship tip

Watch out for blatant lack of disclosure of the TRUE difficultly of shore excursions offered by Seabourn. Pay FAR more attention to the RATING of Moderate or Strenuous than to the description of the tour provided when deciding if you can do it. And don't assume that even a tour rater as EASY will be easy.

Ports of call

Monte Carlo, Monaco

3 out of 5
Decent place to embark.

Portofino, Italy

4 out of 5
Nice excursion.

Portoferraio, Elba

4 out of 5
Wonderful place to visit. Great shore excursion.

CRUISE CALANQUES

3 out of 5
It was raining, so we didn't see anything much. Might have been nice if it was clear. It was a good tradeoff to change the itinerary to spend this day at sea since the weather for the ports was fantastic.

St. Tropez, France

3 out of 5
Didn't go into town. Excursion was good.

LA CIOTAT, FRANCE

3 out of 5
Docking location changed, since we were on an excursion and didn't plan to go into town anyway, this didn't significantly impact us.

Mahon (Mao), Menorca, Balearic Islands

5 out of 5
Loved Menorca! Would like to live there. Good excursion to see it in depth. Not too much walking.

Barcelona, Spain

3 out of 5
Did hop-on, hop-off bus on our own. Required a taxi to get to/from the bus, but otherwise not too bad.

Malaga, Spain

4 out of 5
Great port. Good excursion, but it was rated EASY and had quite a lot of undisclosed walking which was problematic for my wife. Overall, excursion descriptions CONSISTENT did not disclose the true difficulty. As an EASY, there should have been minimal walking and that optional, but that was NOT the case.

Tangier, Morocco

4 out of 5
Good port. Good tour, but again, the description understated the REQUIRED walking. When a tour is rated MODERATE, but the word "walk" only appears ONCE in the tour description, it would not lead one to think that a major amount of walking was required, but it was.

Casablanca, Morocco

1 out of 5
Great port. One GOOD tour (Casablanca) and one HORRIBLE tour (Marrakesh). The descriptions SIGNIFICANTLY understated the REQUIRED walking. When a tour is rated MODERATE, but the word "walk" only appears ONCE in the tour description, it would not lead one to think that a major amount of walking was required, but it was. When a tour is rated STRENOUS, but the work walk only appears once and nothing says that it is HOURS or intense walking, it comes close to being fraudulent. The whole thing gives me the impression that whoever writes the descriptions is trying to DOWNPLAY the effort required in order to sell tours. If a tour is rated MODERATE or STRENUOUS, there should be some detail explaining WHAT there is about the tour that makes it more strenuous than one rated EASY. And in our case, the Marrakesh tour was BOTCHED COMPLETELY, with the guide running is ragged in a circle around the same streets in the souk three times and never getting to the restaurant for the promised included lunch. The deliver of this tour was TOTALLY at odds with the tour description. We were given a full refund because we complained bitterly, but that is hardly enough. This was just short of abuse and we can't ever get that day of out lives back. I can honestly say that this one day came close to RUINING the whole cruise for us. Neither my wife not I will ever look back on Marrakesh with anything but horror. And Seabourn didn't seem to take it seriously or even care.

Arrecife, Lanzarote, Canary Islands Did not visit port

We didn't find any tour that was interesting and rated EASY.

San Sebastian De La Gomera, Canary Islands Did not visit port

We booked a tour but canceled it after the disastrous tour to Marrakesh and the fact that we simply COULD NOT TRUST what the tour description said and had to assume that it would be WAY TOO MUCH walking for my wife, who was still trying to recover from that HORRIBLE tour.

Santa Cruz De La Palma, Canary Islands Did not visit port

We booked a tour but canceled it after the disastrous tour to Marrakesh and the fact that we simply COULD NOT TRUST what the tour description said and had to assume that it would be WAY TOO MUCH walking for my wife, who was still trying to recover from that HORRIBLE tour.

Santa Cruz De Tenerife, Canary Islands Did not visit port

We booked a tour but canceled it after the disastrous tour to Marrakesh and the fact that we simply COULD NOT TRUST what the tour description said and had to assume that it would be WAY TOO MUCH walking for my wife, who was still trying to recover from that HORRIBLE tour.

Funchal, Madeira

4 out of 5
We took the hop on, hop off bus on our own and had a good experience with it. The walk from the ship to the bus stop was quite reasonable (the first time that was the case on this entire cruise).

Lisbon, Portugal

3 out of 5
Decent place to disembark.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Smooth and easy disembarkation. But to be honest, it was quite a relief getting off the ship since we were still jangled from the awful experience earlier in Marrakesh.
