Ovation of the Seas

7 Night Alaska (Seattle Roundtrip)

Sail date: September 02, 2022

Ship: Ovation of the Seas

Review summary

The ship itself is great. Clean, nice decor, good layout, but the staff seem indifferent and the ports of call are pretty inaccessible if you are trying to do things on your own/without an excursion. Get everywhere early if you want a seat. If the walking track on deck 15 is too windy for viewing scenery, try deck 5. It's covered.

Embarkation

Takes about one hour to get through the lines

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Smaller portions for sure, and less daily variety than I've had in the past

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Pools are easy enough to find a chair which is a relief but most activities were either trivia or "name that tune".

Entertainment

3 out of 5
I was told reservations are required for the Pixels show but on the last day I guess no one cared anymore bc everyone was just walking in.

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
I've been on tons of cruises and this cruise had the poorest service, unfortunately. And it wasn't that the staff was too busy - that is understandable, it's that they didn't even look up when you approach their counter. Alot of things were empty/ needed attention. My room steward didn't want to separate my beds, the waiters at dinner never came to our table - I finally had to go to the front to ask for attention in the main dining room which is basically unheard of in cruising. Just overall a feeling of staff not really caring. Maybe they have finally just snapped, but it was noticable.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
This ship is quite impressive. The seas were REALLY rough a couple nights and this ship must have the newest stabilizer tech because the motion was minimal considering the weather. The staterooms are HUGE with new, clean, beautiful decor. Plenty of power outlets too. Buffet layout is genius so there are never lines. Some of the venues are too small so get to anything you want to do early or there won't be any more seats

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
I had just a standard interior and the cabin was huge! Probably double as wide as a standard interior on other ships because it had a seating area too which most interiors don't have. Plenty of power plugs and very clean.

Ship tip

While the ship never really feels crowded, the venues do fill up surprisingly early. Shows, trivia, games, bingo, all of it filled up with no seats left so do get to anything you'd like to do uncommonly early.

Ports of call

Juneau, Alaska

2 out of 5
Easy on/off the ship with access to downtown

Victoria, British Columbia

2 out of 5
Again, docking so far from the main town made Victoria hard to plan. Walking into town was about 3 miles round trip which eats up alot of time. The BC Royal Museum was mostly closed.

Sitka, Alaska

2 out of 5
The buses into town took up alot of time and the town itself did not have much to see/do if you're not in an excursion. Getting a bus back to port took about 45 minutes in line.

Skagway, Alaska

2 out of 5
Skagway itself is charming with tons of shops, historical info and a hiking loop right near town but tendering in took a long time and then a 15 minute walk into town was a very easy walk, but took up even more valuable time.

Cruise Inside Passage, Alaska

2 out of 5
No announcements were ever made about our approach to/progress through the passage which was unusual

Seattle, Washington

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Much faster getting off the ship than getting on
