STAY AWAY!! by JasonL5

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I would definitely say to stay away from this cruise and I will give you a bunch of reasons for it. From the moment we got on board the ship we were unhappy. The people who worked on the ship were very unfriendly and rude. They made it seem like they hated their jobs and could care less about the people traveling on board. I would say the only nice people were some of the employees in the casino and one German man who worked at the customer service desk. I actually got a bunch of the casino people's information and have stayed in touch with them. Next was the Freestyle dining. I understand that I knew about it before I got on the boat, however, I did not expect to have to wait over 45 minutes every night sitting on the floor outside the restaurant to have dinner. I think that is absurd. If wait times are going to be that long, then you should be able to make a reservation. On top of that the food was god awful. I think I actually lost weight on this ship cause I couldn't eat anything it was soo bad. The only good food was in the restaurant you had to pay extra for - OF COURSE! Getting off the ship at ports was also a huge problem. Well the ports that you had to be tendered at. NCL tries to makes things more organized but in the end it makes things a lot worse. On every ship I have ever been on, when you wanted to get off the boat you did. You wait in line for a tender and then get on it. On NCL you have to get a ticket to get off and are not allowed off until they call you color AND number. We got to the port at 11 AM and we left at 5 PM. I was in the middle of the tickets given and I was not allowed off until 1:30! I'm sorry but when I have to wait on the ship for half the day to get off I am not happy. Not to mention we got up early to get in line to get tickets. When looking around while waiting to get off, I have never seen so many unhappy people. How can you run a cruise line with so many unhappy people? Another problem we had was the activities on board. There was really nothing at all to do. I don't think I saw the cruise director on board the ship once. I have been on over 8 cruises and every single one of them always had activities going on and I was very disappointed that this one did not. There were no activities by the pool on sea days and nothing at night but shows. Once it hit 10 PM it is like every person who worked on the boat went to bed. Lastly, there were not nearly enough chairs by the pool or top decks of the boat. My friends and I would get up at 10 AM and be by the pool by 10:30 AM the latest and there would not be a single chair available. Instead of having lounge chairs they have these little tables all around the pool. I can say most people are not going by the pool to sit by a table, they want to go by the pool to lay out and relax. The thing that drove me crazy too was there was soo much space to put more chairs, however they were all locked up and when asking if I could use one, I got yelled at by the cruise staff.

My wife and I had a great cruise by GaylenM

The only bad thing that I could say about the whole cruise is smokers! If you want to ride the public buses in Mexico, don't. Just too many pick-pockets on the buses that work in pairs.

Mixed reactions by RobertH2

Nice ship, big. Last time my girlfriend took this ship they had a movie theater-now they took it out but we didn't find out till we went to look. Great room service at no extra charge. Hot tubs were lukewarm at best on several days. One day it was too cold and windy to lay in the sun so we really wanted the hot tubs. No way. Drinks are outrageously overpriced. They nickel and dime you to death over everything.

A tie with other cruise lines by NancyL4

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

We enjoyed the cruise on the Norwegian Star to the Mexican Riviera. The entertainment was excellent. The tour to Todos Santos had an excellent guide named Marco. The food in the dining rooms was very good. The bathrooms in the cabins were a good size. The furniture in the cabins was not built-in, poor quality, and awkward. The Atrium area was attractive and comfortable. The cleanliness was satisfactory.

Good Value Comes at a Price by Andrew1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The Norwegian Star is a well-designed, clean, tightly run ship. The cabins are remarkably comfortable for their size, there are food options for virtually every palate, entertainment on the ship was mediocre, but heck, I took this cruise for a taste of interesting ports, not for the shows. My biggest disappointment was the unvarying feeling that I was prey on-board for NCL to squeeze for another dollar. There is *constant* pressure to buy more on the ship. If youd like a soda, that will be $2 extra, a drink $8. Want a glass of orange juice? Go get it yourself. Loose a beach towel? That will be $25. What a tour of the ship? That will cost you. There is pressure to buy shore excursions through NCL, to buy jewelry, art, to buy bingo tickets, casino chips, spa treatments. I even received an advertisement in my room saying I should buy a DVD on how fold towels!

Good time in the riviera by Brians11

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

My age 22. The ship was great and as always NCL crew was the best. Been on 4 NCL cruises and several other lines now and have never found better. The food was good and finally NCl upgraded the beds to the new "bliss bed" they were a little to firm for my taste however a million times better then the typical cruise bed. Freestyle cruising is the BEST! Eat when you want, what you want, with who you want ect. Its your vacation do what you want

Take a cruise at least once in your lifetime. Get cheapest room with a view... lower you are less shaky it is. And kids will love to see waves at close range...

The worst cruise by JuanG4

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (young children)
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

The ship was fine the service in general was bad. If this is your first cruise, it might be ok. But if you have cruised with other cruise lines you will be very dissapointed with NCL.

NCL seems to be preparing to sell the li by JayR

Sail date: /
Ship: Norwegian Star / Destination: Mexico

I am convinced that NCL is getting ready to sell the line to another operator. They are charging discount rates to fill the ships but are now serving inferior food, reducing almost all free seaday activities and are charging for everything. It is my theory that this results in a profitable profit statement but is killing off repeat business. Passenger dissatisfaction was very vocal.
