Review summary

When I cruise, I like to eat and enjoy the ship's entertainment. The buffets has a very limited selections, and most of the other restaurants has a cover charges. The ship only has show at 7;30 pm and 9:30 pm.at one stage.

If you want to take a guided tour of the ship, it cost $89 per person. It's only a tour of the ship, not an excursion. All the other excursions offer for each port range between $50 to $500 per person.WOW, it's expensive.

The cabin was very, very, very small with almost no room to move around.

Make sure you have a lot of money to waste before booking the cruise. The cost of the cruise plus tax, gratuities, cover charges, drinks, photos, gifts, excursions and etc. Make sure you get a visa before you go to St. Petersburg, Russia.

The specialty restaurants were part of the package and Cagneys, Teppanyaki and Moderno were very good, but the Italian restaurant wasn't very good. We got to choose 2 packages, so we got the Ultimate Dining package and the drink package for free.

You do not need the $160 visa for St. Petersburg if you join a tour.    If you book a local tour, the cost is around $200 (USD), and they take care of the visa for you.  If you add in the tips for the guide and driver, the cost is about $230.

In my opinion, because of the size of St. Petersburg, the language barrier and the long lines for tickets to attractions, even if you had your own visa, it is impractical to explore on your own in the time you have.   The tours provide transportation, an English speaking guide, tickets to the museums and even food.   Also the tours is for 16 hours over 2 days and they pick you up and take you back to the boat. All this for $70 (including the tips) over the cost of the visa.  Its a bargain.

Try GetyourGuide app to book tours, even free ones where you just tip the guide gyluy at the end of it. I just took that trip in the Norwegian star to the Baltic and I like it (although I will never sail with Norwegian Cruise line again).

Since when are there cover charges on most of the other restaurants on the Star? Did you try the two main restaurants?
