Norwegian Pearl

9 Night Southern Caribbean (Miami Roundtrip)

Sail date: January 05, 2007

Ship: Norwegian Pearl

Cabin type: Inside

Traveled as: Singles/Friends

Reviewed: 17 years ago

Review summary

The ship was only 1 month old when I took this cruise, so everything was brand new and clean. The staff was not properly trained and many of the employees were not friendly and most of them did not speak English.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
restaurant cover charges were high. Cagney's steak house had a $20 cover charge, plus additional charges for certain entrees. The rest of the restaurants had cover charges from $10 to $15 per meal. Menus in the two main dining rooms were very limited and many nights there was nothing on the menu that sounded appetizing to any of us.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The Jean Ann Ryan shows on this ship are awesome. As a matter of fact, all the shows were superb. The cruise director was the best I have ever had. I think his name was Matt Baker. He was flawless, funny and always motivated to keep the party going. The bowling (at $5 per person, per game) does not work on a ship. Too much ship motion = really low scores.

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
Room stewards left a lot to be desired. We had to beg for ice and coffee packets. The carpet was not vacuumed when we arrived and it took too long to get the rooms cleaned each day. The wait staff at all the resaurants and dining rooms were slow, very slow. I am not sure if it was the kitchen causing the problems, or just bad wait staff.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Very nice pool area with high quality lounge chairs and beds (yes, full size beds) on the pool deck.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Staterooms are very small compared to other ships. They don't even make the beds anymore, they just pull up the blanket and smooth it out. NCL used to put bedspreads on the beds each morning, but not anymore.

Ports of call

Bridgetown, Barbados

1 out of 5
The people of this island are very rude. They don't want cruise ships visiting this port. Take my advice and stay on the ship at this port. We rented a car (got ripped off at the rental place) and got lost because none of the roads are marked with street signs. We spent hours trying to find our way back to the port so we could turn in the car and get back on the ship. The caves are closed, have been closed for a long time, and they don't know when or if they will re-open. There is nothing to see or do of interest on this island
Don't Miss: NONE

St. John's, Antigua

5 out of 5
Another excellent port. Very friendly residents. Beautiful island. Smooth and easy to navigate roads.
Don't Miss: Antigua Canopy Tour, brand new canopy zip line tour with 9 zip lines and an additional bonus "survivor-type" course. Very safety conscious staff.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

5 out of 5
My second time here, and I would gladly go again. Very nice residents and a beautiful island, laid back, but fun, with nice beaches.
Don't Miss: The Baths tour is beautiful, but you must be in good physical shape to navigate the path to the baths and swim in the strong currents.

Castries, St. Lucia

5 out of 5
Beautiful island with very friendle residents. WARNING, the roads are very winding on the tours. Take dramamine to prevent car sickness, but don't miss the excursion. They are fantastic.
Don't Miss: the Pitons, two huge mountain peaks

Roseau, Dominica

5 out of 5
Beautiful island with friendly residents. There was good snorkeling here and the weather was perfect.
Don't Miss: Trafalgar Falls

Pros: the ports of call

Cons: High Cover charges at the restaurants, poor service in restaurants and room stewarding.
