Norwegian Joy

Ship: Norwegian Joy

Cabin type: Balcony

Cabin number: 13966

Review summary

Despite being locked in or out of our room twice for hours with door issues and toilet stoppage once, Joy is a nice ship. NCL completely failed with travel (last minute flight change) and transportation to & from ship (paid for a lift van for wheelchair which never happened either direction), NCL port and airport personnel clueless!

Embarkation

1 out of 5
The worst in my 15 cruises. Lines 1000 people deep, no entry for handicapped or Haven, no NCL reps to help

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Excellent, although NCL never offers lobster or upscale desserts

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
Great activities, but costly additional charges for the best ones

Entertainment

2 out of 5
Great performers, but tired same as always musicals. Couldn’t get into Cavern Club shows; venue way too small.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Service was very good from almost all staff

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Outstanding sanitation, excellent ship layout

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Great, except engine vibration, especially when docking. Door key didn’t work & took 2-3 hours to repair (happened twice)

Ship tip

Bring lots of $$$ for racetrack, laser tag, VR

Ports of call

San Pedro (Los Angeles), California

1 out of 5
LA has the worst port set up ever. Long lines in the sun, too small for mega ships

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

4 out of 5
Great port. Tendered, so no access for handicapped.

Mazatlan, Mexico

4 out of 5
Very industrial port. Had to shuttle to cruise port. Port shopping tacky.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

4 out of 5
Nice port area, good shopping if you taxi into town or beach

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Better than embarkation, but no NCL help, no reserved lift van as promised by NCL

Cruiserick: comments are right on. My wife commented on the dining: good food but no pizazz! Can’t let the little things ruin a trip, it was still fun! Long time cruisers with NCL, RCCL, Celebrity, Princess. We have a transatlantic booked with NCL next year, but doubt we will go mainly because of transportation and transfer issues.

Hello htown I have to agree with you on most what you said here I was on that same cruise The embarkation was horrible and nobody to guide We were in three specialty dining restaurants which was The Japanese steakhouse the ocean blue and Cagney steakhouse which all three of these places were awesome on the food and service This is our first time on being on a NCL cruise we’re actually loyal royal Caribbean cruisers and I can see the difference between the both I noticed when we first got onto the ship from the Port of LA they didn’t even greet you on the ship and didn’t have some sort of a party as you walk in compared to Royal We were lost when we got into the ship but managed to find our way up to the buffet to have lunch The buffet for breakfast was good we didn’t care for it at all for dinner we tried it once just wasn’t that appealing or tasty I like the wind jammer better on royal And also I agree with you they don’t offer lobster at all on any of the three main dining rooms on NCL or upgraded desserts Or even give you extra food if you wanted it I know royal offers lobster one or two of the nights on the cruise and extra food if you wish to have it And I like the idea on the main dining room on royal where you get used to having the same waiter and I like at the end of the cruise on the main dining room they give you that end of the cruise show which I didn’t see that at all on NCL And also if you wanted to do the race track or laser tag or they’re nicer arcade games you have to pay money for it or buy a package on NCL It was hard to go see the comedy shows they were always booked up and always on reservations same with the cavern not big enough area. But the ship as a whole was a nice ship to me I just didn’t feel like it was enough to do it seem like after the last port was finished it was a somber last two days but we made the best of it we were happy to be on a cruise and also the weather was way too cool to really enjoy being outside in the pool We enjoyed all three ports we just did city tours basically And at the end the disembarkation was good. Also the gift shop on NCL wasn’t all that good they didnt have much selection compared to Royal they seem to be more focused on jewelry and watches But we will definitely do another NCL cruise again in the future because they offer some of the ports that Royal doesn’t have
