Review summary

This is my 7th cruise and one of the best I've taken. This was my first cruise with NCL and first to Alaska. We had a balcony room on the port side and it was clean and spacious. The Jewel Class ships have great bathrooms with a separate toilet stall and a shower with serious water pressure. The staff were all friendly and accommodating. The food was excellent-with the possible exception of O'Sheehans. We ate at O'Sheehans twice, once just for dessert and once for dinner. The dessert was excellent but the dinner (seafood basket with an appetizer of mozarella sticks) came out cold.-everything was cold. La Cucina and Moderno were probably our favories. The steak in all the restaurants was excellent. The performance at Teppanyaki was really good and the fried rice was good but not my favorite restaurant. We ate at the buffet for breakfast and lunch and one dinner and it was always good. We usually sat outside at the Great Outdoors for fresh air.

The shows on the trip were all excellent. There were two that I wouldn't have taken my young children to because they were slightly explicit but still PG-13.

Getting on and off the ship in port was very easy with the exception of some difficulty with customs in Victoria BC. We just waited awhile for the line to go down and then got right off. If we had had an excursion planned right at scheduled disembarkation we would have missed it because we were about 2 hours late getting off the ship. I believe all the people who had shore excursions through the ship were accommodated. I special touch this line did was offering hot chocolate, water, and cookies when we re-boarded the ship. This was really nice because many of the ports were chilly!

On this particular cruise we didn't use the gym or the spa but toured them both. The gym was small and didn't face the bow of the ship (on the Explorer of the seas the treadmills all look out enormous bow windows so you get amazing ocean views while exercising!) but it seemed adequate. They had several great classes offered like yoga, spinning, and a suspension (TRX type) class but for a fee so I didn't do them. They also had some classes offered on cooking, pizza making, and cupcake decorating but again for a fee so I didn't do those either. We had plenty to do even on the days at sea without having to pay additional for classes but it was nice they offered them. Back in the day I remember those types of classes being free but it seems like more and more cruise lines are charging for that kind of activity.

We loved all the ports we went to and our only complaint is that we would have liked more time in each but that is the nature of cruising in Alaska.

I also really enjoyed cooler weather cruising, it was a very different experience from the caribbean cruises I've taken in the past.

Overall I loved this cruise and would definitely cruise again with NCL although our next cruise is with RCI. I don't know that I'd cruise Alaska again just because I want to explore the state more thoroughly.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
All the specialty dining was excellent. Our favorite: Moderno Buffet: Excellent for breakfast and lunch, only at dinner there once. Great desserts O'Sheehans: our food was served cold so not great but maybe just a fluke. We didn't have time to try again

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
We didn't participate in very many of these just because we spent a lot of time looking at the scenery. We did a few trivia games and karaoke of course but otherwise just sat at the great outdoors or on our balcony and watched for whales. We used the hot tubs, shuffle board, and took walks around the promenade deck. It's a very nice ship although it is small and doesn't have the activities the mega ships have like rock climbing walls or wave machines-but we liked it.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
The shows were all excellent. We especially lived the magician and the Cirque Bijou show on the last night. Two of the shows were a little explicit so people with young children might want to skip those but it explains that in the daily schedule.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
All of the staff were super friendly and accommodating. Our room steward even brought us a gallon of distilled water for my husband's C-Pap machine without us even asking! All the staff were great!

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
This is an smaller, older ship that is going to be refurbished starting in January of 2018. With that said, we really liked it. I prefer to sail on smaller ships rather than the mega ships. Alaska is more about the destination and scenery than the ship so it was great for this cruise. Probably wouldn't be great on a cruise with a lot of sea days...

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
Great cabin! It didn't feel as roomy as a balcony cabin on the Explorer of the Seas (RCI-our only other balcony room) but it met our needs. The bathrooms on NCL are nice because they have a door that separates the toilet rom the sink area.

Ship tip

We got our food from the Garden Buffet and then walked aft and sat outside at the Great Outdoors. There were always tables available out there and the view of the back of the ship was incredible!

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington

We stored our bags at the Pier for $2/bag until 3:00. Then walked to Pikes Market, then walked to the monorail and paid $4 roundtrip for a ticket to the Space Needle/Arts Center. It was a great tour!

Ketchikan, Alaska

We went sea kayaking in Ice House Cove which was really nice but wish we had time to walk around the city. This is an easy port to get off the ship with no plans and just sign up with a local company at the pier.

Juneau, Alaska

Liquid Alaska Tours have some GREAT Mendenhall Glacier Tours and we were very very pleased with this tour company!

Skagway, Alaska

We took the fast ferry to Haines and looked around there as well. We took a river trip through the Chilkat Eagle Preserve but it was too early for eagles. Wish we had known that. We saw the most eagles in Juneau. We walked around the town of Skagway too and it was a neat little town. Several hiking trails near the port that we would have taken if we had known about them earlier.

Victoria, British Columbia

We should have hired a pedicab right off the ship in the pier but decided to walk to fisherman's wharf and then downtown but couldn't hire a pedicab from either of those areas. For a fairly inexpensive and fun outdoor tour of the city hire a pedicab at the Pier. They will take you to fisherman's wharf and around the downtown area on an hour (or more) tour. We enjoyed the walk though and walked along the sea wall.
