Review summary

Really enjoyed the cruise as a whole. The itinerary was fantastic and our excursions were wonderful. The food was good and the open dining was good for breakfast and lunch, but preferred a more quiet setting for dinner in the included specialty restaurants.  Thought the prices in the specialty dining areas and drinks were higher than on other cruise lines. The Jewel did not have some of the more modern in-room features for checking onboard account or making reservations.  The staff were fairly new in the dining areas.  We encountered daily challenges with the toilet in our rooms not functioning because someone kept depositing things not intended for use in them.  Getting onboard and off went very well.

Entertainment

Need greater variety of TV options and clearer pictures on available channels.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
The navigator did a fantastic job through Sawyer Glacier and all of the fog. Weyan and Archie did a wonderful job as room stewards. All of the guest services staff, especially David, were great.

Ship Quality

The Jewel needs to visit the update yard to fix the plumbing challenges, receive paint over rust areas throughout ship, and install more modern features. Some areas of carpeting showed a lot of wear and tear. Did not like seeing cleaning supplies and carts all over the passageways all day making it hard to get through. Did not like having to negotiate around painting while trying to relax on deck or by pool - should have been done at night or when passengers were ashore and not during peak use time.

Cabin / Stateroom

Beds were comfortable and room had plenty of room.

Contact Northwest Tours for a wonderful and worthwhile experience - city, Pike Place, and Space Needle - ask for Yager. Great price and fantastic guide. Use the trolley and Link to help with hills.

Ketchikan, Alaska

Take the trip to see the totem poles and enjoy a little local market for some wonderful jams and syrups - you might even see a bear trying to catch salmon.

Juneau, Alaska

Take time to go to Mendenhall Glacier and walk to the waterfall. Bring a towel and challenge yourself to put your foot/feet or walk in the water (feels like an ice bath) to the sand bar for great pictures.

As the ship heads into the area, be at Spinnakers - get there early. The ship makes a 180 degree rotation to exit.

Skagway, Alaska

Visit Olivia's for GREAT food - everything was fresh and expertly prepared. The bus tour and helicopter rides are the best options.

Victoria, British Columbia

Recommend taking a bike tour around the city - especially Beacon Hill Park.
