Review summary

Enjoyable 11 day cruise, not especially memorable save for the Panama Canal partial transit.

Embarkation

Excellent, we are Platinum Plus latitudes members and benefit from priority embarkation.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Garden Cafe buffet was OK but not exemplary. Some repetition but generally a good broad spread of options. Was good to see soups finally identified as having a veg, fish or meat stock base. Speciality restaurants were good, great service. Cagneys - I had the roast beef and was disappointed the steaks were better. Moderno is warm and friendly, meats f varying quality but generally the beef seems better than other cuts. Good sushi also available on the buffet salad bar. Bistro was lovely, teppanyaki was a noisy boisterous affair with plenty to eat. Thanks

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Bingo was expensive, quizzes were ok and pitched at the right level. We took a spa pass and enjoyed that every day, in the shared men and women area only a small bubble bed pool and warm tiles beds. We’ve been on the Jade several times so knew in advance and are OK with this but might surprise some. Casino was relatively quiet, shame that blackjack tables now have $10 minimum. Smoking may bother some.

Entertainment

We didn’t attend any of the shows

Children's Programs

No children

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
Usual generally good service but only exceptional on the last day or so when the crew know passengers are asked to fill in feedback cards.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
Pretty high standard throughout

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
Two single beds zipped together make for a large oversized king sized bed. Only one bed side table though due to the sofa bed position. Enough storage for two. Cleanliness satisfactory, minor gripes really - main bathroom light was hit and miss working, didn’t get a floor mat most days, balcony door quite difficult to open.

Ship tip

Be aware that if you buy drinks on the first day in port in Miami there is a port tax payable in addition to the drink price

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

Efficient embarking and disembarking. New NCL terminal under construction

Cartagena, Colombia

Took a taxi with another couple to the walled old city, had a lovely walk around the cobbled streets. Much better than we expected. Got an Uber back to the ship easily enough. At the port there are two aviaries with lots of exotic birds to get very close to. Also two anteaters in a separate enclosure, wild monkeys in the trees too.

Colon, Panama

Generally the area beyond the port is pretty run down, there is a shopping area within an easy walk but it’s pretty low rent. You only get a few hours there .

Puerto Limon, Costa Rica

2 out of 5
The sea conditions were such that despite two attempts the ships could not dock safely, so we just left and had an extra sea day.

Harvest Caye, Belize

Been before, it’s a private manicured island, lovely big pool with swim up bar, nice beach. Most excursions required getting boat over to the main land.

Coxen Hole, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras

Again been before and have very low expectations. As we had missed Costa Rica we were a little stir crazy so wanted to go for a walk, which we did. One of the locals politely pushed themselves onto us a a walking tour guide. We didn’t really want it and initially wondered how we might lose him, but actually after 10 mins we really warmed to the guy. We stuck with him and after maybe an hour’s wander around Coxen’s hole we circled back to the port. CH is quite a poor place in reality and seems quite unfriendly our “guide” did peel back the myth and showed us a different side to the town.

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

4 out of 5
We liked CM very much, we got the shuttle trolley bus to the nearby Mahahual beach. We enjoyed a “swing seat” bar for strong cocktails and an amazing beach based massage for $20 for an hour. $8 for a taxi back to the port. Our favourite port of the trip.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Long queue to get off the ship but once through ship security we easily found our luggage and got through customs with no issues.
