Review summary

We are a couple in our mid-20s and we chose the Norwegian Getaway to be our first cruise and we absolutely loved it! Norwegian certainly did not disappoint. We were looking for a fun but relaxing environment with lots of activities and opportunities for new experiences and this ship delivered! We had the best vacation of our lives on this ship, and I certainly think that people make their trips fun - I can't understand why anyone would give this ship less than 5 stars! It was so impressive that we booked another NCL cruise while on board, and booked a 3rd NCL cruise since.

Ship Information

The crew and amenities on this ship made the entire experience near perfection! We were so impressed with the cleanliness of the ship and the decor. The ship FEELS expensive, and the crew is very attentive and they put on lots of great activities to keep everyone happy. It was our first cruise, and we were nervous about seasickness but neither of us experienced anything. We went in September (hurricane season) and we didn't have any issues aside from a little rain when we were leaving Miami.

Activities

Bring a highlighter! There are so many activities to do throughout the day you will need a vacation after your vacation. We woke up every day at 6 am to watch the sunrise and run outside on the track, and found activities to do all day long (trivia, demonstrations, etc.). We would take a nap from 3-5 pm when it was the quietest, then wake up and stay up till 12 am! We loved the art crew (this is a great way to get involved and get some free booze if you don't have a package) and we spent a lot of time with them. Legally Blonde is not to be missed, and neither is Burn the Floor. The Illusionarium was our favorite. Next time we would try to get a closer seat. It was extremely impressive. The shows were among some of the best we've ever seen. We also loved the running track outside, it was best to use it early in the morning because it gets quite hot around 9-10 am. I also loved the treadmills that looked out onto the ocean. No music or TV needed - it was surreal!

Dining

We loved the food on the ship, it was fantastic! We particularly enjoyed the asian restaurant and O'Sheehan's, We were EXTREMELY disappointed with Ocean Blue and would not suggest going there ever. It was a huge waste of money, and it was truly our only complaint. We did complain to Guest Services after feeling sick from eating there, and nothing was done. Oh well, water under the bridge. Le Bistro, on the other hand, was incredible, as were all of the included restaurants. We loved going to Taste for breakfast - it was a much more relaxing environment.

Ports

We went to the beach at the USVI and BVI ports. It was a great price (about $8 USD each, each way) and they had cheap drinks on the shore. Megan's Bay was the most incredible beach I've ever been to, I would go again. The beach in BVI was VERY crowded, but it was better further down the shore. We did a snorkeling tour with NCL for Nassau since we had heard some negative things about the port and it's safety for visitors, and after being there we could tell why. The tour was great though, we loved it and the guides were fantastic!

Disembarkation

We had a flight back to Toronto, Canada at 12:00 PM which is a little tight, so we did the "easy walk-off" which was not well coordinated at all. We got off in time, but it was tough. There was no clear line, people were pushing and shoving and cutting in line everywhere.

Cabin

We had an inside room on the 10th floor and we loved it. No noise issues, no sea sickness, more than enough space for two people. Do be sure to bring conditioner as there is no conditioner in the bathroom. Other than that, it was great!

Summary

We loved this ship. We saw it again at one of the ports on our second cruise and were really nostalgic about it! We would go on it again for sure. Next time, we'd get the UBP though because it really does add up buying drinks. Also, we wished that the casino would have a non-smoking area, since all of our clothes smelled terrible after visiting there. I just kept using the same dress to go back night after night!

Cabin / Stateroom

Cabin was small, but it was enough! We organized our stuff on the first day and never had an issue with space. Hair dryers were amazing! We got a room that had only one neighbour so that made for a very quiet stay!

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

3 out of 5
The port was very easy to get to from the airport hotel. It was clean and well organized.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

3 out of 5
We visited Magens Bay and absolutely loved it! We've been to beaches in Mexico, Cuba, and the Dominican republic and this one was the best we've ever seen. It was beautifully maintained, safe, no one bothered you on the beach. Also, if you walk down to the end of the beach you're completely alone so it's super romantic and private. We would visit again.

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

3 out of 5
We visited Cane Garden Bay beach in Tortola. It was an incredibly hot day, and the beach was full of people. It was impossible to find anywhere on the beach that was "private". We didn't stay too long because of the heat and lack of shade options. Beach chairs were available to rent. Drinks were cheap. The view from the beach was very beautiful.

Nassau, Bahamas

2 out of 5
Nassau was the kind of place where you feel like, "Oh yay, they have machine guns so that is supposed to make us feel safe..." As a Canadian who has never really ever seen a gun, this was shocking, and it made us feel uneasy right away. We had heard some concerns about Nassau, so we booked an excursion with the cruise line. The price was very reasonable and the excursion was really fun! We had never snorkeled before and it was an amazing experience! They also had great punch on the boat so it was basically like a Nassau shore tour, snorkeling and booze cruise all in one! Great deal!

Getaway Casino does have a non smoking area on one side of the casino.

We sailed the Getaway in January and also loved the ship! I have sailed several other ships and cruise lines before trying NCL, and am hooked on the Freestyle cruising concept! Legally Blonde is no longer the Broadway show. It is Million Dollar Quartet, which we thoroughly enjoyed. We also loved O'Sheehan's Irish Pub, and how it was open 24 hours a day! And their buffet is the best I've had at sea!! I had a different itinerary than you, sailing to Honduras, Belize, and Mexico, and loved the new to me ports. As for the debarking concerns with the self assist option, that continues to be a problem with the Getaway. It was on my January cruise, and I keep reading that it is an on-going problem. I did not have issues, as I left my luggage out the night before, and left with a tour group. When I cruise this coming January, I will have to decide how I want to leave. Perhaps leave luggage out night before and choose latest time to debark. In that case I will have to book a late flight back to Buffalo, NY.
