Our cruise went into Gutan Lake and through the Panama Canal locks so naturally the cruise is more expensive simply because of the government fees and port charges. I was on the Gem for this sailing and thought the food was some of the best ever on any of my 60 cruises in both the complimentary restaurants and the specialty restaurants.

Prices for the Gem do seem quite expensive for a smaller, older ship. I know a lot of people love the Gem class, but I don't understand why it's sometimes just as or even more expensive than the newer, larger ships even when it's not on a unique or remote itinerary. I almost booked the Gem to Bermuda but ended up going with the Joy instead because the Gem was significantly more expensive for the same destination and almost the same dates. Ended up booking the Joy and going on a newer, larger ship for a better price.
