Review summary

Staff was quite friendly but visably and verbally unhappy. However, if I needed something, they were all over it. Smaller ship, but cozy. Rough water on the way back, but in my opinion, the Captain and crew did a top notch job keeping it as smooth as he could.

Embarkation

3 out of 5
The wait in line was a little lengthy, but had nothing to do with the Gem crew.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Very clean, and very good. With all the eating and drinking I did, I found nothing that I disliked.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
It really seemed the activities were designed more around seniors.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Music end entertainment was pretty good.

Children's Programs

5 out of 5
Staff was great with the kids in splash academy.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
Staff was great overall, however, I saw a lot of public reprimand from management to staff. Upper management was great to us, but the slave driver attitude to the lower staff was quite un-appealing.

Ship Quality

4 out of 5
VERY CLEAN in the common areas.

Cabin / Stateroom

2 out of 5
The individual caring for our cabin was great....and very caring. However, there was a constant smell of urine in the bathroom. Even though he cleaned, the smell remained. Never got looked at.

Ship tip

Make sure you bring a power strip. Only one power plug in cabin, as they are in most ships.

Ports of call

New York, New York

3 out of 5
Too cluttered, unorganized. Not crew fault.

Basseterre, St. Kitts

5 out of 5
Loved it. Learned a lot from the locals. An eye opener.

Castries, St. Lucia

5 out of 5
Again...loved it.

Bridgetown, Barbados

5 out of 5
Not one complaint.

St. John's, Antigua

5 out of 5
Great experiences.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Only port I did not like. Disembarked at 7ish, but nothing opened until 9. Was only at port until 12:30. Locals were less than hospitable. Maybe just a bad day, but I ain't and went back to the ship and layer down.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
Crew was great.

We were on the gem in December for an 11 day cruise and our first full day at sea we were in 30' seas. Super rough and stormy. But it cleared up and the rest of the trip was pretty smooth. I think you run that chance of getting high seas going out of New York.
