Review summary

Have been on the Gem before and done the itinerary.  The staff (concierge, butler and steward) are so friendly, patient and overall excellent at their jobs.  They anticipated our needs and responded immediately to any request.  I use a small, collapsible wheelchair and they offered to help open, close and even push it to the elevator.  We took the Explorer shore excursion in St. Maarten and it was delightful.  They put the wheelchair on the bus and helped with it to the boat.  They made everything so easy for us.  We tried the Moderno restaurant and loved it.  We also enjoyed our meals at Cagney's and Le Bistro.  I needed a low sodium diet and they made sure to prepare the food salt free.  We received wonderful personal service.  The food in the main dining rooms was good but we missed having salmon as a "regular" on the menu.  Also missed the braised lamb shank.  But we enjoyed all our meals.

The acrobats were the highlight. The Gem staff works hard and puts on a good performance. Also enjoyed the tribute to Whitney Houston and Tina Turner.

Service and Staff

The best! Francesco the concierge made it easy to do the shore excursions. I Puto our butler was wonderful to us and Jeremiah our steward always looked out for us because we have the collapsible wheelchair. The butler Dilip on the second cruise (we took back to back cruises) always anticipated our needs.

Ship Quality

Ship quality is good, some parts better than others.

Cabin / Stateroom

It was very spacious. Wasn't aware that the cabin would be directly under the bridge. We had a steel door that had to be closed on windy days. The upside was that the balcony was huge and we loved the lounge chairs.

Ship tip

We stuck with eating in the dining rooms so we wouldn't overeat. He didn't gain weight--of course she gained 5 lbs. But the food and desserts were worth it. Part of our enjoyment is being served and the staff everywhere is exceptional.

Ports of call

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Loved the Kon Tiki shore excursion.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

Loved the Explorer excursion

Tortola, British Virgin Islands Did not visit port

Disappointed that the tours started at 7:30 and 8:00AM only. With a wheelchair it's hard to get around if you need a later start.
