Pleasantly Surprised by the Mega-Ship by coachschawl

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

I was a little bit nervous booking a cruise on this mega-ship, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't overwhelming at all.  It honestly felt no different than any other ship I have traveled on.  NCL provided enough additional restaurants and entertainment to keep everyone happy.  We typically stay in a balcony room, but found the inside cabin on this ship to be quite comfortable, with plenty of storage space.  Bermuda was an amazing itinerary and we had a fantastic time.  The only minor complaint we had was that we felt the main dining room food was a bit lackluster at times.  We felt that NCL was trying to promote the specialty restaurants by making the food included in the price of the cruise, just so so.  There was barely any seafood in the main dining room, but they advertised how great the seafood was at the Ocean restaurant.  It was a bummer.

Great time!!! Enjoyed ship and island by perron49

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Loved the cruise!  So easy to get to New York, I live in Massachusetts and was there in 2 1/2 hours.  The parking was so easy as well.  We had a great time on the ship something for everyone.  My family enjoyed the pool, waterslides, bowling, dart games, shows and spa.  There was a lot of things to do on board.  However,  you could do nothing and relax or be as busy as you wanted. We loved the island of Bermuda.  It is so beautiful and the people are so nice and accommodating.  We highly recommend this cruise!

Breakaway to Bermuda by mykalw

Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

It was a great cruise. The Breakaway crew works very hard to make it a great experience. I have cruised with Norwegian before and I am pleased every time!

There is always something to do or experience on the cruise or you can fine that nice quiet spot on the boat.

NY to Bermuda by me123

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

First, we have never been on a cruise that allowed us to stay in port for three full days-really gives you the opportunity to see all 21 square miles of the island. Very helpful and accommodating staff-they are certainly there to please. For instance, two nights in a row the night club right below us played loud and blaring music-being ones who go to bed early, I called downstairs and it was taken care of right away and never happened again. Next day came chocolate covered strawberries and a free dinner at one of their fancier restaurants where you were usually charged. WOW! The only reason why I did not give this cruise an "excellent" mark was because of their coffee-gosh awful horrible-so I drank tea instead. Other than that, it was a fabulous trip and great to celebrate our 40th anniversary!

I wanted to Love it....But..... by milan120

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

I booked Breakaway despite the so-so reviews.  Boarding was simple.  In general everyone heads to the Buffet.  It was decent.  Balcony room was okay- small but modern.  Nice Bathroom free soap & shampoo.  Where I was extremely disappointed was the pool area.  There were two pools- One for adult where the majority of the time it was filled with 20 and 30 year olds drinking, morning till night.  The other kiddy pool- filled with parents and kids- underneath the slides.  The pool deck was very industrial looking- did not have an open feel.  Lounging chairs were on 3 different decks FAR from the pool.  The 3 main shows were very good (Rock of Ages, Burn the Floor, Cirque). The comedy shows not so much.  My other big issue was the LONG wait for food.  The dining rooms Savor,Taste, and Manhattan- were modern  but the service at times is rushed and impersonal and the wait for dessert after dinner was like 30 minutes.   The pay restaurants were okay- but it was disappointing that they DO NOT enforce the dress code.  I paid $30 for a higher end dinner at Cagney's and dressed appropriately - only to see people across from me in tee shirts and SLIPPERS..(steak at Cagneys does not compare to the Steak at Royal Carribean's CHOPs). The best place on this ship is Osheehan's - where people hang around all week to eat (free) and participate in the game shows.  They do NOT have enough seats for the people who want to partake in the activities.  A one time charge of $7.95 for room delivery- but continental breakfast has no charge- SILLY RULE.  Bermuda is a pretty and safe island.  Cruise excursions are not necessary.  The other area that was a let down was- NO PROMENADE, to walk around in during the evenings.  I found myself missing the older ship I went on last year- Explorer of the Seas- which had a nice Latin Lounge, 24 hour Pizza, ice cream...(but now I think it was replaced by Freedom of the Seas - 5 nights to Bermuda.   Oh- they do have a private a $$ Pay pool for adults- I never saw it it was hidden behind a wall.  NOT GOOD.   I hope that cruising does not go the way of NCL- I do like the option of a few private restaurants; but they go overboard.  They do not enforce their own rules and the misbehaved kids in the dining rooms-  drove a lot of people crazy.  I am sorry Breakaway- i wanted to LUV you - but I doubt very highly I will return.  Oh... horrible souvenir shop - hardly anything to peruse....

Crowed Areas by mtbike

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

The only negative is the the common areas are far to small to accommodate the number of passengers on this ship.  For instance, finding a available chair on deck is a project, and the pool area is far to crowded to enjoy.  The Atrium activities are also far to crowded to host in that location.

Also, why does the smoking area have to take up space right in the pool area? This smoking area should be moved to another location or eliminated completely.

I was very happy with the cruise. My only problem was the gym. Every gym have the use of the sauna  & steam room. I felt it was nickel and dime, to make quest pay extra.

pretty good first experience by stephenwu30

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

consider my cruise cherry popped.  took a 7 day trip to bermuda.  lets do this in bullet form.

positives:  - buffet food was really great, so was shanghai noodles  - paid food, cagney's and moderno (churrascaria) was really good  - good free shows including rock of ages and burn the floor and paid show, cirque jungle fantasy  - second city comedy act was funny  - staff was friendly and helpful  - water slides, basketball court, rock climbing, walking trail  - lots of parties  - did i mention the buffet?

negatives:  - drink prices, ran up $800 for 2 people in 7 days  - their games are costly, bingo and deal or no deal  - late night after 1130p, only o'sheehan has food available and their food is awful  - too much jersey shore people, obnoxious drunks at times

i enjoyed the cruise but it did cost me a fortune.  wish things were cheaper.  but i guess this is typical of all cruises, i probably won't do it again.  i got cabin fever on the ship.  i'm a peacock, gotta let me fly.

good not great by bigmanv350

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

staff was very good to excellent

ship was clean

public spaces were way to small for the number of passengers.  pool enormously crowded not one chair after 8AM.  I like open seating but the restaurants wer again often overwhelmed.  the food was generally good to very good.  reservations were almost impossible anywhere but the high end additional expense options.  seem designed this way to maximise revenue.

Nice trip to Bermuda by bruestle

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Although a lot larger than we have ever been on, we were very surprised at just how quiet the shipped moved.  No turbulance at all, just a very steady cruise.  Meals were great and even though there were over 4000 passengers we never waited long for any seating. WE did not have young children w3ith us but also were surprised at just how much was available for kids. I would recommend this trip to anyone!

Wonderful Ship; Great Crew; Beautiful Island by Poodiemuckle

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

SHIP PROS: Very quick and efficient embarkation process; super-clean ship; very comfortable cabin (#8728, class M6 mini-suite with large balcony) with a very large bathroom and a balcony so large it holds two regular chairs, a small round table and two chaise lounges; "Burn The Floor" dance show; food (unless your an overly pretentious food snob, the food on the Breakaway is more than sufficient - all three MDRs, La Cucina, Uptown Bar & Grill, Garden Cafe, O'Sheehan's, Moderno for breakfast); crew (friendly, efficient); the Waterfront (great for a stroll after dinner, except for the area around Fat Catz and the Cigar Bar which is like walking through an ashtray)

SHIP CONS: If hanging out poolside is your thing, you're likely to find it crowded and noisy.  Debarkation was a bit disorganized; long lines on the pier. We took a late time and waited until the final call to leave the ship and avoided most of the chaos in the terminal.

SHIP SUMMARY: Beautiful, clean and lots of fun. You can find a party if you're looking for one, or a quiet space if that's your thing. Ignore the whiners complaining about having to wait for everything - their experience is the result of their lack of planning and unreasonable expectations. Would definitely sail the Breakaway again.

BERMUDA PROS: The weather (super hot and super sunny all three days we were in port), friendly people; efficient bus and ferry system (buy a pass and just ride the lines around the island for some amazing views, take a ferry from Dockyard to St. George's, a UNESCO World Heritage site); St. Catherine Fort (plan a couple of hours to explore the entire thing and take in the views); Gibbs Lighthouse (worth the climb up the hill and up the lighthouse); National Museum (save this for the last day in port, it's a 5-minute walk from the ship); Dockyard (again, save it for the last day in port); the Unfinished Church in St. George's; Art Mel's Spicy Dicy in St. George's (the best fish sandwich you'll ever have); Barritt's Ginger Beer (a delicious non-alcoholic soft drink); Tobacco Bay (near St. Catherine Fort, climb on the rocks for amazing pics of the ocean and the Fort)

BERMUDA CONS: Use your credit card carefully (I used mine three times - the visitor booth on the dock to buy transport passes, and a t-shirt and frozen yogurt shops in Hamilton - and someone hijacked my card number; my card was frozen by the credit union and I couldn't use it to purchase gifts from the glass and pottery studios in Dockyard); ignore the pointless walking tour in the Bermuda guide book (it will take you down some sketchy backstreets - three shifty characters on a front stoop yelled some homophobic epithets at us after we'd walked by - and it offers no history of the buildings it takes you past).

BERMUDA SUMMARY: Loved everything about it and will definitely return.

Excellent experience. by eileengannon44

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

First of all, this ship is CLEAN, and the staff is very friendly. Everyone in our group of 14 adults agreed that the entertainment was spectacular. We liked that there were large theater shows like Burn the Floor and Rock of Ages, but the smaller venues with dueling pianos, 2nd City Comedy, and other bands displayed incredible talent.  There was always something to do. The food was excellent with a variety of choices. We tried two specialty restaurants and really enjoyed Cagney's for a special occasion. Otherwise, we enjoyed the main dining rooms and found no reason for the special restaurants. We thought the wifi package was too expensive, and most people in our group could not get the ncl app to work on the phone. But we were happy to be "disconnected." We only took advantage of one excursion, a sunset sail, because getting around in Bermuda is easy. However, with the Breakaway and another ship in dock, the lines were long for the ferries and busses. I would definitely recommend this cruise to others.

Everything was wonderful, food was great, plenty of activities, and the ship was stellar...

I would have gave it 5 stars but the casino deck and the surrounding areas were not smoke-free.

We had a Great Time! by maryoconnor

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Three of us travelled: my husband (Tom), our adult son (Michael) and myself. I’ve been on several cruises – NCL, RCI, Celebrity, and some Windjammers. My husband NCL, Celebrity, and some Windjammers; and our son one other NCL.

Our son lives and works in Manhattan and we had seen the Breakaway when we were visiting him in November. I chose this particular week because it included my husband’s birthday.

My husband and I took Amtrak from DC on Friday and stayed at a hotel in SoHo for 2 nights. We had used RCI points so there was no cost for the hotel.

On Sunday, our son and I were playing in a recital at the temporary Steinway Hall at 11:00 am and this worried me a lot, getting from 1155 Avenue of the Americas to the cruise terminal by 2:00 all aboard.

We left Steinway about 12:15 and took an Uber to the terminal. The driver left us the terminal by the Gem about 12:35 but it was an easy walk next door to the Breakaway terminal at Pier 88.

We left our checked baggage and went through the terminal process very quickly. We never even had a chance to sit down and we were on board by 1:00.

That was the fastest I have ever boarded any ship.

The Garden Cafe was crowded but we found a table without much effort. Before we finished eating, it was announced that the cabins were ready.

Our cabin – 9918 – was fantastic! It was a bit tight for the 3 of us but we made it work.

The balcony was the best part. I had chosen an aft balcony on 9, starboard. We had 2 loungers, 3 chairs and 2 tables and plenty of room to move them and ourselves around.

Looking up to the other decks, we could see from the angle that ours was larger than the others above us.

As it turned out, looking out over the balcony, we could see the fireworks just fine.

There was a lot of storage but some was tricky to find.

The bathroom was a good size, as was the shower. There were more shelves in the bathroom than usual and I liked being able to leave my cosmetics and stuff in there. I had read that there was no conditioner in the showers so I brought my own.

I also followed advice from Cruise Critic and brought magnet hooks for the walls and those were great for hanging hats, card lanyards and so on. Giant clips, meant for holding towels to chairs were repurposed for clipping our last day paperwork under the TV.

About the TV – we never watched it so we can’t really comment on the programming. We did watch the info from the deck once or twice to find out about the sea conditions.

Our bed was great, very comfortable king sized with 2 pillows each. The steward, Bradley, turned the couch into a nice bed for our son.

The end tables on each side of our bed were pretty narrow but we made that work. The lights beside the bed were a little high up, so I’d have to get up to turn mine off. Luckily, I read a Kindle before bed so I never really needed to use the bedside light.

Our luggage arrived before 4:00 pm which was really nice.

I had been concerned about going on a ship this size but there was really no problem. The elevators were crowded the first day but after that, no big deal. I would like to point out that we mostly always took the stairs going down and walked up if it was only 2-3 decks.

When we were in the elevators, they were clean. Both of the RCI cruises I took had sticky elevator buttons, presumably from children using them after eating ice cream or something. One thing that RCI has that I would like to see on other ships was the “day plate” on the floor. Often, I get involved in a cruise and have no idea what the day is, so that would be helpful on all ships.

We got the unlimited internet package and it was well worth it for us. On other cruises, I would get the max minutes and always be watching the time – and I would still often run out at the end. I am the web master for a couple companies so I need to spend some time online each day. This internet package was a life-saver for me and we were able to share it between the 3 of us.

We also made good use of the iPhone iConcierge app. We used it as a messenger to let others know where we were and we made reservations for 3 restaurants and 2 shore excursions with it. I also checked how our account was doing. That cost us $7.95 per phone and was well worth it.

Everywhere we went, crew was smiling and friendly – and everything was very clean. At the end of the cruise, we took the behind the scenes tour and everything was so well run. Amazing.

We mostly ate in the Garden Cafe. We also ate once each in Taste and Savor. Our specialty restaurants were Moderno Churrascaria, Teppanyaki and La Cucina.

We had been at the Churrascaria on another Norwegian cruise and loved it. This time, we knew not to eat too much earlier in the day! This time, I went lighter on the salad bar portion. The “gauchos” (aka waiters) brought sausages, lamb, both beef and pork ribs, chicken, filet mignon, and garlic beef, among others. Of those, I had the sausages, lamb, chicken and beef before I was too full. All excellent. Michael gave up even earlier than I did! For dessert, I had mango rice pudding – nearly as good as Thai sticky rice with mango.

Teppanyaki was a pretty standard Japanese food, on this ship cooked by a Philippines chef (he called himself fake-Japanese). Because it was on a ship, with no flames allowed, there was no onion volcano although another chef tried it with an onion and water for steam. Not as impressive as with oil and fire but clever nonetheless. There were combinations of chicken, beef and seafood (including lobster) served with miso soup, seaweed salad, vegetables and garlic fried rice. I had green tea cake/ice cream for dessert and the others had fruit sashimi.

La Cucina was good Italian food. The minestrone was unusual (for us, anyway). We got bowls with a little bit of pasta stuffed with vegetables and a piece of Italian bread on top. Then came the “surprise” when the waitress brought around the tureens of broth that was poured over all.

We also attended Cirque Jungle Dreams and Dinner.

I had read many complaints about the Cirque dinner so we ate in the Garden Cafe a bit before the show. The food (and show) were great. I told the waitress that I was allergic to shrimp so she offered double filet mignon but I declined. My portion was excellent.

The show itself was fantastic, especially for being at sea. The costumes were very clever.

Tom was using the Internet Cafe one morning so Michael and I played the 15 minute Sudoko challenge. One of the main challenges of that was they gave a blank form and we had to fill in the starting numbers. I messed up some in copying from the big screen and that made it harder to figure out the answers.

After that was Trivia and we did ok as a team.

The library was very small and open only certain hours. Tom went back later and checked out a book.

The library, game room and halls outside were decorated with photos/history of the Rockettes – the “godmothers” of this ship. 2 of them were on board, giving exercise classes, Q and A periods and photo ops.

We played Scrabble a few times in the games room and that was fun. Others played board games like Clue, chess, Yahtzee and card games.

Michael did the ropes course. I had planned to go, too, but I was wearing sandals and couldn’t go. Tom checked everything out and said he’d try it “later”. Unfortunately, neither of us ever got a chance to try that later.

On a different day, Michael also climbed the rock wall. Even if I’d been wearing closed-toed shoes, I wouldn’t have tried that!

Our star athlete, Michael, also used the gym all the sea days and reported that it was really good. The treadmills and ellipticals have sudoko and other games to while away the time.

We had no use for any of the Children’s Clubs.

Generally, we found the service to be excellent and friendly everywhere we went on board. We had occasion to visit Guest Services a few times – Tom cut his hand on something and they were fast with bandaids, antiseptic pads and so on. Michael lost his apartment keys the very last sea day – those never turned up :(

We didn’t do any entertainment other than the Cirque Jungle Dreams and Dinner which I mentioned above, under restaurants.

Tom and I had been to Bermuda on a land stay before but Michael had never been. The first day, we did a bus tour of the whole island. That was very interesting but we had some folks that had trouble getting back to the bus on time.

One person ended up being on a regular bus to Hamilton from St. George and we spent quite a bit of time locating her and getting her back with us. If I’d known that would be the, we would have just stayed in St. George and taken the ferry back. Instead, we rushed out lunch to get back on time.

The next day, Thursday, we took a bus to BAMZ and the Crystal Caves. When we were in Bermuda before, we’d tried to take the bus from Hamilton to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo but somehow missed the stop.

BAMZ and Crystal Caves were well worth the trip. Someday, we will go back to BAMZ when we can spend more time.

Friday, I’d arranged for the Restless Native for snorkeling. I had arranged that not through the ship but through and saved $30 per person over others who booked through NCL. I had never done that before so this was a trial run and worked very well. We were back in plenty of time for 4:30 all aboard.

This was one of the best snorkel boats we had been on. Shallow enough that I didn’t have to worry about drowning getting back on the ship but lots of caves and coral to support fish swimming around. This sailboat also offered noodles for floating with, kayaking, banana boats and paddle boards. Lots of fun – and boat-made cookies.

We were in the “Orange” disembarkation group so we had a leisurely breakfast, went back to the cabin to pick up our carry-offs and down to the Atrium. WiFi still worked so I checked my email and we read.

The giant screen was showing the staff singing and waving goodbye to us.

There was some hold up at Customs on shore so they stopped offloading for a few minutes, then resumed.

Our color was supposed to be called about 10. It was called around 9:45. We were off the ship, got our luggage, through Customs and in an Uber by 10:30. Very fast and efficient.

We had a great time overall and wouldn’t hesitate to take this ship again. I loved our balcony! Having only one port was great so we could use the ship as a hotel was really nice.

The one “problem” was Saturday night coming back into New York. There was a lot of cabin shaking/noise (remember, we were on 9 aft). I had read about that in one of the reviews so I wasn’t too concerned. I had been expecting noise/vibrating when leaving Bermuda but that wasn’t so bad.

Coming back to NY was the loudest/shakiest.

I’m ready to go again, as soon as I can save up enough money :)

Awesome Vacation by SandyBeaches04

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

My boyfriend and I took this cruise on June 7th to Bermuda.  This ship is amazing and has so much to offer. We had a balcony room and while it was smaller than what I have experienced on other ships, the room was clean and pretty spacious. We purchased the dining packaging and found the the food to be excellent worth the price. Bermuda was a great port of call and there was a lot to do on the island. The only thing Norwegian can improve on is the service towards passengers as the crew wasn't as friendly as Royal Caribbean or Carnival and the adult pool should be only for ADULTS!
