cruise of sept 6-13, 2015 by docjik1215

Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

lovely ship. would not recommend this cruise for anyone over 35 years of age too many kids of all ages.

cruise line charges for many standard things such as some shows;use of steam room and sauna;service in dining rooms is slow;internet does not work and is located in noisy part of ship;after 930 at night cannot get drink at cafe(buffet);staff not greatly interested in serving guests;pools too small for swimming;casino is very smoky etc.

overall on scale of 10 would give 4.

What a great week! by mchapnick771

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

We've cruised many ships over the years. I've been on about 10 cruises and my wife on about 20 cruises. We enjoy RCL but usually take Princess or Celebrity recently. For our anniversary, I wanted to take a cruise that was easy to get in and out of and decided on the Breakaway out of Manhattan. Honestly, I felt that we would be "settling" for Norwegian because the other lines didn't have a date that was convenient to our work schedules. I was wrong!! The breakaway was much nicer than we expected and we had a wonderful time for the whole week.

The embarkation process was seamless and we were on the boat, in about 30-45 minutes after parking our car at a local parking garage that drove us to the boat. The room was a mini suite with a balcony with the largest bathroom that I've ever seen on a boat. While small, the balcony was large enough for the two of us. We had a free upgrade and we used it for the Dining Plan. While the main dining rooms were adequate, I would definitely recommend the upgrade for anyone that enjoys their food. We made reservations in advance and never had to wait for any dinners. The food was excellent (French, Italian, Steakhouse and Brazilian steakhouse) and the service was very attentive. The shows were all well done and high quality. Bermuda was beautiful with sparkling water and powder soft sand. All in all, a wonderful way to spend a week with my wife. The only problems that we found were the same complaints that other people have mentioned...the pool was small with limited space to sit around it. In addition, we had a lot of people that opted for the drinking package on our trip, rather than the dining package and there were some drunk obnoxious people beginning early in the day. Unfortunately, this wasn't NCL's fault, although, giving them unlimited drinks didn't help! Several hints that I gathered from other reviews were helpful:

1. Make your reservations in advance. We reserved all of our meals and shows ahead of time, but did change a few things as the cruise went along.

2. Bring a case of water if you're driving in. The bottles of water are expensive and NCL delivered our case to our room without any difficulty.

3. Bring travel mugs. I like my coffee in the morning and the little cups they provide just aren't large enough.

In summary? I would definitely take the breakaway again...in a heartbeat.

The NCL Breakaway is a phenomenal ship, the whole experience from when we embarked in New York till when we disembarked a week later ( a week is not enough) was wonderful and we hope to be able to do it again soon.

Great Cruise for all! by badgefam

Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

A cruise to Bermuda makes for a perfect trip!  NY Port is a fantastic, easy departure site. You get to enjoy the boat and all the amenities. 3 days docked at one island, lessens the hassle of venturing from island to island. Free style dining on Norwegian  allows amazing food to be available...when you're hungry!!  Safe and happy travels!

Excellent cruise by SusanTX

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Four of us went on the Breakaway to Bermuda.  Check in was a breeze, the ship is very nice.  I was pleasantly surprised how good the food and service was.  Bermuda was fun, we liked having almost 3 days in a single port.  The first day we took the ferry to St. George then the bus to Hamilton then back to the ship.  The second day we rented scooters!  Not for the faint of heart, but a lot of fun for exploring the beaches without the big hike up to the bus.

Great time!  I highly recommend it.

Awesome......EXCEPT by Cruisingcritic

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Our friends planned this cruise 2 years ago.  We were so excited planning on celebrating my friends cancer free years.   We booked our staterooms next to each other.  For some reason when we arrived we found out had changed one of the rooms to starboard side and a different floor.  We found out the ship was full and there was nothing that could be done.  We did not get to experience the time and plans we had made.  has not been helpful in compensating us for this mistake on their part.  The cruise however was wonderful even though we were not able to always connect and one afternoon lost each other for 3 hours. VERY Frustrating.  Perhaps using a different company next time will work better.

Very Relaxing - no worries! by RomanticCruise

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

This was a very relaxing cruise start to finish.  Well organized embarkation in New York.  Several days at sea and then almost 3 days in Bermuda.  Bermuda is a very friendly and beautiful place.  Great beaches (Horseshoe Bay and Church Bay).  St. George and Hamilton were great to visit.  Very efficient and easy to use buses and ferries around the island.  Many activities aboard the ship if you want to participate or you can just relax.  Overall a very good experience.

Birthday Breakaway! by dianecan

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Loved the time at sea....enjoyed sitting on upper deck to enjoy the sea breeze and also to get away from so many children!  As a grandparent I absolutely have no objection to traveling with children but when the other travelers are telling children on board to slow down or to stop running, it is obvious something needs to be done.

Even in the casino we sat next to children!

nice experience by actusreus

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

This was a solid experience -- our 4th on NCL.  Travelled with two of our adult children in their 20s.  We still like the smaller Jade and Pearl best, but the Breakaway was a clear step up from the Epic in design, food quality, and service.  If you enjoy a big-ship experience, then this is an excellent choice.  Never a lack of things to do.  for those who usually cruise (relatively) smaller ships, as we do, the breakaway was nicely designed to carve out more intimate spaces.  the Waterfront was a terrific idea, and a great way to use outside space.

Norweigen Breakaway-don't bother. by endlessmntspm

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

We were excited to take this cruise and it was a disappointment. The only bright spot was our cabin steward who did a great job. The boat smelled of sewage for several days. Trying to make a reservation for dinner was impossible by phone. we consulted guest services, an encountered the least helpful customer service rep. The transportation for our shore excursion was terrible, an old, rickety bus, that included seats in the aisle. On top of that, the buffet area tables and floors were always dirty. The casino was also smoke filled and unclean. had I known smoking was allowed on the ship I would not have booked this trip. Bermuda was just ok. Everything closed so early there wasn't much for nightlife. Many entertainment items on the ship were of extra cost and hardly worth the money. I don't expect we will use this cruise line again, unimpressed.

Best cruise ever by quadsd

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

We had a wonderful cruise, great cabin 12308 aft.  Got early boarding # and was able to get Vibe Beach club passes.  Best way to relax on board.  Ate at many of the specialty restaurants and enjoyed every one of them.  Perfect sailing weather and beach weather.  Wish the cruise was longer!!!

Bermuda-beautiful island by phelpsh0936

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

We normally prefer smaller ships, but this ship had the best entertainment of any cruise we have ever been on.

Service in the bars and restaurants were a bit slow.

Acoustics in the atrium and theater made voices garbled and hard to understand.

Happy atmosphere by LearningCurve2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

Would definitely recommend this ship for families.  Huge choice of activities and the crew create a welcoming atmosphere.  If you don't like to be around a lot of children, you may prefer other cruise lines which do not offer the same facilities as the large Norwegian ships.  Enjoyed many of the activities in the Atrium - a great focal point of the ship, the giant screen there is awesome.  Adult swimming pool is totally inadequate for the number of passengers.

Kids had a Blast! by scottann15

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Norwegian Breakaway / Destination: Bermuda

There were plenty of activities on the cruise and we had a wonderful time!  A couple of complaints/comments were that we were charged a port fee in New York for beverages, which we were not informed about in advance!  Another VERY disturbing situation took place when we had $100 onboard credit for specialty dining and, after being told by 2 different people at guest services, and one who went to a lot of trouble to arrange things and make reservations for us for the Cirque show/dinner, I found out (by accident) about an hour and a half before the show that we could not use our onboard credit for this!!!  We ended up leaving this credit behind, and I would have been very angry if I had not found out before we went to the show and I was charged for the tickets!

Excellent cruise. The food, entertainment and staff were very friendly. Don't have any more to say. I would sail again on the Breakaway from NYC to Bermuda. I am sailing from Miami next year.
