Review summary

It was fun to be together as a family. I think our experience would have been better on a smaller, more traditional ship. We wanted to give NCL a shot. We’ll return to RC and Holland Am mid size ships.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Very efficient. On the ship in 15 minutes.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Buffet had good variety with typical buffet food quality. Difficult to find seating during peak times. MDR was good. The large MDR was extremely noisy. The specialty restaurants were all excellent.

The Observation Lounge

3 out of 5

Attractive but too busy and noisy during much of the day to be useful.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
There were a lot of activities but most were in noisy common areas that impacted other venues. The go carts and laser tag looked fun to the teens in our group but were too pricey for a good cost benefit purchase

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Only made it to Jersey Boys. I went with two grand daughters. The production and talent were excellent but the course language was very off-putting. I was amazed they had the age standard as low as 12. We didn’t go to other shows because it was very difficult to manage the logistics for a group of 18 with ages from 2 to 68 years.

Children's Programs

3 out of 5
Okay but lack of well-organized and fun activities. It was a good place for our grandchildren to meet other kids.

Service and Staff

3 out of 5
It was adequate. No one rose to the level of being noted for outstanding service.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
Ship was clean and attractive but severely flawed in use of space for a variety of group needs. Overall, the ship was extremely noisy. The hallways were very narrow and almost impossible for me to pass through on my mobility scooter when the cleaning carts were in the halls, which was a significant part of each day. We did a wonderful area to gather our family - on deck 8 rear around the outside of the ship. It was perfect for Glacier Bay day. Not crowded, fairly quiet but still able to hear the ranger information.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
Our cabin was clean but extremely small (135 sq ft) for the 3-4 people in each of our 5 cabins

Ship tip

Be prepared for loud noisy crowds.

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington Did not visit port

Didn’t have time to tour before embarking.

Cruise Inside Passage, Alaska

4 out of 5
Beautiful but mostly done at night.

Juneau, Alaska

3 out of 5
Not particularly exciting. Ship docked a long distance from the center area.

Skagway, Alaska

3 out of 5
Good for what it was. Very crowded.

Cruise Glacier Bay

5 out of 5

Ketchikan, Alaska

2 out of 5
Quaint port, but wide-spread street construction was a downer.

Victoria, British Columbia Did not visit port

High winds prevented the ship from docking.

Disembarkation

3 out of 5
Overall it went pretty well. It was strange that we did not receive any disembarkation information the night before so we’d had to seek it out on our own.

I'm kind of surprised at the rating of Jersey Boys too. I've seen the movie, so I know what to expect, but the movie is rated R. I'm kind of curious as to why the rating scale is so different from the stage version.
