Relaxing Cruise by DebbieM20

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

The Poesia is a beautiful ship. The cabins are updated with energy efficient ques to put your key. It also tells the steward if you are in your cabin. The staff are pleasant but most do not speak very good English. You will need to approach the staff for conversation. The staff are very friendly after that. You get the feeling that you are in Europe due to the guest population. The food is plentiful, but very bland and generic. I could not wait to try food at the ports of call-looking for flavor. Avoid any cabins on deck 12. Our balcony cabin was right under the cafeteria with wooden floors and chairs that echoed in our cabin for every meal. The early mornings are the worst-bring earplugs-they helped out with other noises as well. If you like the disco and other dancing activities, get your nap in. The disco does not even start until after 11:30 PM and the other bars and lounges offer only light music. MSC is new to marketing the United States guests. They have been a very popular cruise lines for Europe, which is why there are so many Europeans and Canadians guests on board. As long as you do not compare this cruise lines with another, you will enjoy the European flair that MSC has to offer.

MSC Poesia dissatisfied with overall exp by SonyaB1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Western

I have cruised about 12 times with various cruiseline (Carnival, NCL and Royal Carribean). I wanted to try the MSC line since it was an Italian line. The ship is pretty but the amenities are limited. For example, the GYM closes at 8 pm and the last seating for dinner is at 8 pm so I does not lend itself to allowing passengers to work out after a late dinner. The dinner service and buffet service was slow and lines were long. The crew members were not at all cordial.

Loved it!!! by TracyR2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Western

We thought the ship was beautiful. Everything was kept so nice and clean. We loved the pool and the floor was a little rubbery so we didn't slip around which was a A+ in my book. The dining room was formal but comfortable and was my favorite event of the day...I love eating out!! The jazz bar we found a little too smok filled but we didn't really experience this anywhere else.

Something Missing by PattiH3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean

We were very disappointed in the wait staff in the main dining rooms and also the food especially on an Italian ship. The tours lacked quality - the accommodations left something to be desired especially the glass bottom boat tour in Grand Cayman and the Catamaran Sail & Snorkeling in Montego Bay, Jamaica.

Listen to the reviews! by EmilyG3

Sail date: /
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean

Where to start. Oh yes. Please for your sake pay attention to the reviews . The ship is very clean and pretty. But, nothing to do. Very unorganized programs and staff. The children's program was poor beyond belief. They actually showed my kids commercials for movies that are coming out and called it entertainment. My son is 7. He complained that all they kept doing was watching music videos and dancing. They have a great playground. But, They never took the kids to play on it. We had to. Food was poor. Hard to get coffee.

RELAXING AND ENJOYABLE CRUISE by Rogerg11

Ship was impressive but the dinner service was slow and it took a little to get used to the buffet times. If you are looking for food at any hour this would not be the cruise for you.

You get what you pay for by JamieB

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean

The ship it self was beautiful. This was the cleaniest ship we have ever been on. However the childrens activities such as foosball ,ping pong.and all the pools are in the smoking section of the ship. As well all the pools and hot tubs close at 7pm which make them almost impossible to use as you are on land all day. If you are english speaking there is a major language barrior with the staff as several of the staff do not understand the english language. The buffet at lunch was the same food all 7 days hotdogs hamburgers and sausage along with a large selection of salads and deserts. In our late dining there were only 3 choices of entrees each night in which 2 of the choices were always pork and pasta. We puchased excursions through the ship 3 months prior to our arrival and when we boarded the ship they were no longer available and they gave us a piece of paper for us to get a refund from our credit card company ourselves. They would not refund our money or let us use the credit toward another excrusion.During the day no entertainment unless we were at sea. When we asked staff for directions they would only point and wave us away not very helpful at all. We did not get any of our daily programs until after 9pm every night so we had no idea what time our excursions were the next day until the program came as the staff we delt with in the excursion office could not understand what we were asking them in english.

"Not a bargain cruise-just low-priced" by MjC59211205

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

This ship is geared towards European travellers most specifically Italian and French. They still have to learn to adjust to the American traveller's preferences but the staff seem to not be as willing to cater to their American customers as much. The people at the reception desk seemed unwilling to help and not quite service oriented, they lack the qualities of the American standard of customer service. The shows are very short and dull. The deck party was half done, it was really just one of their evening shows since they did not offer any refreshments during and after the party. We had to wait for the scheduled midnight snack to get iced tea and juice and coffee since none of these were available during the so-called party, moreso food including snacks. This cruise ship was very stingy with food and iced tea, juice or coffee.

Country Music Cruise?? by DonnaE2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean

We went on board with no expectations due to a bad previous cruise ( Carnival ) so were going only for the country music and ports of call. We had read so many negative reviews that we just were not expecting any positives at all. however it is a great ship, very clean and well run. Friendly, outgoing and entertaining crew. Lounge singers other than the activities crew left a bit to be desired however I do not believe they were professionals so you get what you pay for. I would have thought that if it is a theme cruise more entertainemnt would be geared to the theme. SInce it was during the Olympics and this is a european ship I would have thought that they might have had some time or a room devoted to it. Sports bar might be a suggestion however given the status of television on board it might be a challenge.

Pretty Good! by MariaB1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

This ship has potential, however, I do not recommend it for first-time cruisers, early-birds, night-owls, nor children. I found activities and food lacking. I was disappointed that there were no "towel" animals folded on my bed. Room-service was horrible, nothing was seasoned and litttle things like salt and pepper were forgotten, nothing hot on the menu, but a cup of soup. The only sandwich was tuna on a hamburger bun. The staff that spoke English were friendly, and those that did not speak English at least tried to say, "Hello!" or "Good Morning." The excursions were nice, but crowded and our stay in the ports were too short. There was nothing to do after 12:00am and then coffee was not served until 6:30am. Gelato was good. (for purchase) Ship is one of the prettiest I've seen with tasteful decorations, in main rooms. Please be aware, that Europeans, do not observe our "social space", nor do they believe in waiting for their turn, on excursions, they seemed to be so afraid of being left behind, there was pushing and shoving. They will sit right on top of you, and move your "stuff." I recommend this ship for people with patience and travel experience, only.

Beautiful ship...thats all! by EileenC

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

Having traveled on many cruises, thought this would be a nice change. Ship was beautiful, cabin very small but nice. Choices at night for dinner were awful. Not only bad choices but the food not prepared well. Very European, need to learn how to deal with the American public. Not understanding or how to serve a meal. No bar service at pool or at dinner unless you asked specifically for it. Did enjoy the entertainemet, very nice. Did not do any of the ship tours, thankfully, did our own. Would not recommend this cruise line..

My first MSC Cruise by NicholeM1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Western

My first impression of the ship was that it was large beautiful and extremely clean. However, the entertainment was not very impressive nor was the food. The island we went to were beautiful and the timing was great. The crew was not willing to help and barely spoke English. It was almost like you were bothering them when you asked them a question. Getting a drink at dinner was impossible! Most clients on the ship were foreign and should have been stated when booking the trip. There is not enough to do on the ship for us to sail with MSC again....I forgot to mention how wonderful and pleasant the room service was...

Fabulous Cruise! by AT593

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean

The MSC Poesia is a pleasant change from the more popular cruise lines. The shows were superb with unbelievable costuming. Lots of very talented performers. Also, the ship's staff made me feel special. As a solo cruiser, I pay double occupancy, and this cruise, my eighth, couldn't have been better for the cost. The cruise featured some of baseball's greats which added an American flare to a European-style cruise. The ambiance and unbelievable service--everything was on time--went a long way to enhance my cruising experience.

MSC Poesia by CruisewithMike

Sail date: / Traveled as: Large Group
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

MSC Poesia THE MSC DIFFERENCE General Comments. For those of you who may not be familiar with MSC Cruise Lines. It is an Italian privately family owned cruise line. A subsidiary of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (hence the MSC) which is the largest container shipping company that operates in the Mediterranean region, and much of the world. I will attempt to highlight some of the difference throughout this review for you. The Embarkation Process seemed to be somewhat fast, and then somewhat slow. The initial check-in phase of the process when rather quickly, while the actual getting aboard felt rather lengthy, but then I did arrive around 10am for an estimated 11am boarding time, so all in all I guess you to be fair and honest, the process was rather typical to others. Ships appointments were exquisite. Never had I seen so much marble and gold plating before to not be on a luxury cruise line vessel. But then where is the best place to get marble but Italy. Additionally who would always see someone with a cleaning rag just wiping things down. I must say that it was a very clean ship. One of the best I've seen in that department. The Stateroom Accommodations, while somewhat typical from the standpoint of size, seemed to me to be nicer, and in much better condition than I was expecting for a vessel of her age. I thought the Braille room number signage outside each of the staterooms was a neat touch and tells me something about the companies approach to trying to accommodate everyone's needs. One thing that would rank her down overall was the lack of overall balcony rooms available on this ship. "Peosia" is one of MSC oldest ships, which had only a limited number of balcony staterooms. While many would have said the Multi Lingual announcements made were a distraction, I was always amazed to see the cruise director step to the stage before a show performance and make the accouchements in five different languages as if each was her native tongue. It was kind of entertainment in itself! I must admit it gave me the opportunity to actually see just how bad my German was. MSC Cruise Lines - while I admit, sometimes maybe has a different approach to customer service, than what I might choose. I need to bear in mind, that they are different. If you want to judge them against "their competition", you can't stack them up next to Royal Caribbean, Princess, or Even Carnival for that matter, because first and foremost, THEY ARE NOT A NORTH AMERICAN CRUISE LINE. MSC's closest competitor would be Costa, or P O. While most "cruise folks" have never even set foot on one of these vessels, let alone sailed them. So you really need to understand that MSC, is actually forging new ground by being the first foreign cruise ship company, that has really placed itself not only to cruising in the North American Marketplace, but actually having committed one of its vessels in a mostly full time year round basis "Poesia" here in the United States (Port Everglades) otherwise known as Fort Lauderdale. Should we should certainly give them credit for that! The Poesia offers sailings to the Caribbean, as well as in the fall repositions in New York to do Canada and New England Fall Foliage sailings. The next big difference is price point! MSC's closest rival in the "North American Market" pricing arena would have to be Carnival. And this would be bad how? Well their low prices as well as their "KIDS UNDER 12 SAIL FREE" is a huge magnet for folks especially with families. They buy the voyage on MSC not knowing anything at all about the Cruise Line. There are some very distinctive differences that people just plain don't realize. Not BAD Differences! Just Differences, which oftentimes causes MSC some very huge challenges, which usually their passengers get very wacked out about! The first complaint I hear more than most, is that they are unresponsive to complaints. Fact is, they are not that different from North American Cruise Lines. They operate very much in the same way that a land based hotel property would in say Italy. Once you have made your complaint, fine, they heard you and it will be directed to the appropriate person(s) for further possible action. North American cruise lines do the very same thing. However, as they are Americans (for the most part themselves) will all too often make the complaining passenger feel they have taken a special interest in their problem, but does it get rectified any sooner. No! is the simple answer. Whereas if you make continued or repeated complaints about the same issue they will give you their ear once again, on MSC they are going to inform you that they have heard your complaint and have forwarded your issues onto someone who can do something about it! Sorry folks, it really makes no difference whether you are sailing MSC, or NCL or any other cruise ship, your problem takes time to resolve. You have relayed your plight to someone, now get on with your cruise! So many times when cruising, I see people failing to relinquish their woes and they now focus in on the problem so bad, that it jades the entire rest of their voyage (and anyone in close proximity to them as well). When one really needs to get over it, and get on with your cruise! The next common complaint I hear coming from disgruntled passengers, is there isn't the same amount of things to keep their children occupied on board. This is a very true observation. The Children's programs on MSC are not as elaborate as you find on Disney, Royal Caribbean, Princess, or even Carnival. But they are once again on par with their true competition Costa, and PO. However, I must say that there is one comment I have heard from time to time that is an unfair characterization. Being that MSC doesn't offer adequate evening time supervision for their teen (oldest) aged program facilities. Well folks neither do North American Market Cruise lines after dinner either! Food and Service of the wait staff. I very much enjoyed the genuine Italian Cuisine found in the formal Dining Room and especially the changing each night of the featured dishes from various Italian regions. A comment I heard from others on the ship was their feelings that crew is very standoffish, which is often misconstrued as their being either inattentive or even rude. You must bear in mind that the crews on every MSC cruise ship is European trained. That means especially at dinner, when they bring you something and ask if there is anything else, don't plan on seeing them until everyone at the table is finished and they come back to clear the entire table at the same time. That is the European manner (efficiency model) of large event table service. They are not going to hover over you, asking you several times just during the soup or appetizer if everything is ok. Also, for those of you have not ever been to Italy. Desert whether cake or otherwise is served with a large desert spoon. NOT A FORK. If this really presents a major problem for you, just flag one of wait staff and politely ask for a fork, and they will get one for you! Just do it quickly before they get away! When it comes to dinner time in the formal dining room, each night's menu will feature a different region of Italy that the recipes will come from. Also please don't embarrass yourself by complaining out loud that your food was not up to the usual Italian standards, if your measure of standards comes from your weekly or monthly visit to OLIVE GARDEN, which isn't Italian Food. So often is the situation that people here in the United States are accustomed to "going things alone" and purchasing their entire cruise vacation on line, without the benefit of having anyone KNOWLEDGABLE to assist them with product information. They have simply made a purchased based on (typically) PRICE. Then, you arrive at embarkation, and something small goes wrong (like it always does for me too) like not being able to bring something on board (when it was fine on the other cruise, or I saw someone else take that aboard), or I was made to wait for two motor coaches to get here, or I didn't get my luggage till 9pm that night. There's always something that goes not totally right. It's OK, it happens to us all. Just don't HOLD ON to that bad feeling and let it overrun your cruise adventure as so often people allow! Lastly, (this is directed at basically all of the cruise lines) I really get so tired of hearing people complain about the on-board entertainment, particularly in the form of the show performances. Once again, people have a tendency to rate the cruise ship performances to "Broadway" performances. Yet again, let me spell out the subtle but important differences between what you will see on a cruise ship vs. the New York Broadway Show. First let's talk price. How much did you spend for your last Broadway Performance (just for the show itself), compared to your FREE show on board the ship! That's what I thought, a big difference huh? Next how large was the stage area for your last performance, and oh yeah, by chance was it moving (or actually constantly in motion)at all? Assuming one has not over indulged prior to the show! You have to give an appreciation to the fact that the on board cruise performance is merely just another form of entertainment offered on the cruise, and was not the only thing you went to take in on your cruise. Ok, so now hopefully you too will remember everything we have said here, before you race to the trip adviser or cruise critic message board, and slam some cruise line for their off "off Broadway" review. My overall ranking for "Peosia" is Good. From the standpoint of value for your cruise dollar I have to give it and MSC very high marks. I certainly would recommend MSC to any potential cruisers, and especially to families, or anyone who is on a strict budget. Kids UNDER 12 SAIL FREE (just pay govt. taxes), when they sail in a room occupied by at least two adults over the age of 21, while children 12-17 are generally only $99-$299 depending on the precise sailing. This pricing policy applies on all of their sailings, NOT just select dates or times of the year, so for family and value conscious it is a good deal.

One of the most laid back, enjoyable cruises by RonfromIllinois

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: MSC Poesia / Destination: Caribbean - Eastern

We found this one of the most relaxing cruises we have ever taken. The average age of the passengers were close to our age. It was very relaxed and enjoyable. We requested main dining seating at a larger table and have a fantastic time with the people that shared the table. An interesting and unforgettable time with them. I will warn you that the announcements are in 5-6 different languages. MSC deals with a larger varied clientele than many other cruise lines They have many onboard activities, but not as rowdy as many other lines. I would say a complete thumbs up for the cruise line and this ship.
