Review summary

Overall a great itinerary turned into a Mexican Riviera cruise with Roatan, Belize and Ocean Cay. The ship is nice but dated and looking tired. The food and live music was good. The shows and customer service were poor. I would be doubtful about cruising with MSC again.

Embarkation

4 out of 5
Needed accessibility assistance which took a while to arrange and their is no curb side representatives. The Covid testing was confusing, the website stating a PCR test was required but unvaccinated passenger were let on with an on-site Antigen test. Not surprisingly a Covid outbreak happened on board.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
We changed dining room to the Villa Rossa as the black Crab seemed to have a lot of waiters in training. Once the Covid outbreak happened, they closed one half of the Buffett due to staff shortages which meant everyone was in close contact in the other half.

Onboard Activities

2 out of 5
The pools and gym were good. Most other activities were limited.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The were some amazing on board musicians and really enjoyed the live music. The stage shows were abbreviated and curtailed due to staff illness due to Covid and the highlight was the opera singer.

Children's Programs

2 out of 5
Due to Covid these were closed part way through the cruise. Most kids were unvaccinated and then ended up in close contact with all other passengers (especially around the pools) as they had no organised activities

Service and Staff

1 out of 5
We had a loyalty program issue and this took 12 days to get the answer that head office need to handle it. The crew seem to have no authority to deal with issues and there is constant emailing head office, waiting for a reply (usually in the form of computer says no) and a lack of common sense. It would put me off cruising with MSC again.

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
The ship is well designed but showing it’s age and looking a bit tatty. Definitely needs a refit.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
The best part of the experience was being switched to an accessible cabin as the original cabin had a significant step into the bathroom which caused trips. Well done MSC for sorting that out.

Ship tip

Villa Rossa restaurant is the best one

Ports of call

Miami, Florida

5 out of 5
There is lots to do and the free trolley is great

George Town, Grand Cayman Did not visit port

This port was cancelled from the itinerary before sailing and no reason or compensation was offered

Costa Maya (Mahahual), Mexico

5 out of 5
The cruise complex is great with a nice pool, wifi, a good aviary and reasonably priced massages due to port closures we visited twice.

Coxen Hole, Roatan, Bay Islands, Honduras

4 out of 5
A lovely island but been hit badly the lack of tourists. We visited twice due to port closures and did a ship excursion on a glass bottomed boat which was poor due to the lack of stabilisers on the boat and the reed being quite bleached.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve, Bahamas

5 out of 5
A great relaxation day which again we visited twice

Ocho Rios, Jamaica Did not visit port

This was cancelled due to Covid. The ship cancelled 5 ports during the cruise and only offered $100 onboard credit. The cost of the 18 night cruise reflected the diverse itinerary which was mostly cancelled.
