Mariner of the Seas

7 Night Mexican Riviera (Los Angeles Roundtrip)

Sail date: June 20, 2010

Ship: Mariner of the Seas

Cabin type: Balcony

Traveled as: Family (young children)

Reviewed: 14 years ago

Review summary

The ship is larger than any ship we have cruised out of the Port Of San Pedro. It is large enough to find something to do most of the time, but small enough to get around easily. We still prefer the larger ships, but this is the best we have taken out of LA.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
My Time dining is great. The food quality, especially the beef dishes, were some of the best we have had on any cruise.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
The cruise director was boring. The casino as very large and I finally won a little cash on the trip.

Children's Programs

3 out of 5
Our 14 year old loved his program. Our 10 year old did not like his very much.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Their staff was some of the best we have had. Our most commonly used waiter did make mistakes, but made up for them fast.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
I would prefer a larger ship, i.e. the Freedom of the Seas, but that has not been available so far out of LA.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
A balcony stateroom was a good enough size to accomodate a family of four, including one teenager.

Ports of call

Mazatlan, Mexico

3 out of 5
Pretty town, but we did not get to do much, as the family couldn't decide what to do. Don't bother with the highlights tour. It is not that enjoyable.
Don't Miss: The "Golden Zone" for shopping.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

5 out of 5
We went on a tour and did not see much of the town.
Don't Miss: Do the "Canopy Adventure" if you can handle a bit of exercise.

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

5 out of 5
This was our favorite port. Have lunch at the Baja Cantina. The food is great.
Don't Miss: Try the semi-submersible sub. You get to see most of the sites in one trip.

Pros: Food quality better than most cruise lines and cruises we have taken

Cons: Cruise director was uninspiring
