Review summary

This is the second RCCL cruise, the first taken about 12 years ago on a different ship. The Legend of the Seas (cruising around Italy and Croatia) is an older ship (1995), and there are some areas where this is very apparent (worn furniture upholstery and carpet, for example). However, the staff do a great job of keeping everything as spotless as possible --- from someone constantly rubbing down the brass bannisters, to the many times/day cleaning of the public bathrooms, to the cleaning of the carpets--both indoors and out. The pools were nice and clean all of the time, so we never wondered whether we should swim or not. Same goes for the hot tubs. One area I was a tiny bit disappointed was the quality of the food. Don't get me wrong; there was always plenty of it, but I saw a drop in quality from the first RCCL cruise we took. Also, there are no speciality restaurants on this ship. Our wait staff were always polite and helpful, as were the stateroom attendants. Always fresh towels, etc., even though we thought we could use them again, they were replaced. Can't say enough about the service staff---best personalities ever. The only truly negative thing was the smoking that's allowed in most of the bars, lounges. Made it impossible for us to frequent some of them that had absolutely no non-smoking area, and difficult to stay at those that did have a non-smoking side; it still reeked of smoke. It would be really nice if they had at least one lounge that was totally non-smoking. All in all, I think we had a wonderful time.

Ports of call

Portofino, Italy

We toured Portofino on our own and really enjoyed it. Very picturesque and beautiful port.

Venice, Italy

After hearing so much about Venice, I was a wee bit disappointed, though I have to say it has so much history it's hard to say anything bad. We toured a Murano glass factory, but couldn't afford to buy much of anything. Prices were out of sight.
Don't Miss: A gondola ride.

Naples, Italy

Did a bus tour of Sorrento, Positano, and the Amalfi coastline. Had lunch overlooking the beautiful Mediterrean.
Don't Miss: Driving the Amalfi coastline---spectacular!

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Our tour took us to a local painters cottage, a local farmhouse for traditional lunch and they had three musicians entertain us with traditional music. Just fabulous.

Split, Croatia

Did this port on our own. Visited the marketplace and climbed up a thousand steps to see the gardens, which weren't really what I considered gardens, but someone told us to see it, so we did. Very clean, and great restaurant food.

Livorno (Florence & Pisa), Italy

Did the first day on our own and a tour the second day. Had a wonderful lunch at a local ristorante.
Don't Miss: Seeing the statue of David.

Messina, Sicily

Don't Miss: Taormina -- absolutely breathtaking.

Pros: excellent service

Cons: too much smoking allowed on the ship in public areas
