Kids club wasn’t actually kid-friendly, we won’t be back. Ever.

Review summary

This is my second and last time sailing on holland. My complaint is mainly about the cold shoulder my child and I received while onboard the kloningsdam and visiting the kids club. My son is highly intelligent and very active and energetic. While at the kids club for a short time while I used to spa services, he participated in a few art activities at kids club. When I picked him up after about 1.5 hours later, I was told by the room leader that he was “too disruptive, and distracting to other students while the teacher was trying to explain instructions to the group”. I asked for her to give an example of what she meant and what did he do specifically, and she said “well he just talks talks talks talks talks” the whole time throughout every activity. She said this is his first “warning” and if he continues to act this way he will be “banned for 24 hours” from the kids club. I responded this is who he is, this is his personality and I don’t know that he can change and stop talking that much at his age, she responded “well practice makes perfect” and she walked off. For reference my child is six. He does have an expansive vocabulary, is an extrovert and he likes to connect with others. He’s not a mean spirited kid, and he doesn’t hit or hurt other kids… but yes, he is chatty and talks to himself and others throughout an activity. I found it extremely offensive and unprofessional for her to offer her “talks talks talks and practice makes perfect” admonishments in front of my kiddo and even worse to say that practice makes perfect—-projecting an unrealistic standard of perfection onto a six year old. We have three days left on this cruise and now instead of feeling relaxed and accepted, I feel stressed out and we feel like pariahs, we feel uncomfortable and unwelcome at the kids activities. For as much money as I’ve spent on this trip, I expect staff to be experiences and trained to work with a wide variety of kids, ages, and behaviors. Please expand your knowledge of neurodiversity as well, if you’re offering a kids club in 2024. Consider having brief self-directed activities that kids can play independently, if they choose , and consider offering a quiet room for kids who might be overstimulated or need to gather and regroup themselves. Having a two strikes and you’re out approach is unduly harsh and demoralizing for both parents and kids on vacation.

Ship Quality

Cramped compared to the zandamn and other cruise lines we’ve traveled. The ship isn’t optimized for traffic flow and gets very congested at the elevators, which are very slow, congested buffet area as well. Too many passengers, lots of bottlenecks when it’s time to embark, disembark.

Cabin / Stateroom

Balcony cabin was slightly smaller compared to other cruise lines we’ve sailed on. Room smelled like mildew when we arrived, but they were fast about recleaning and treating the room to decrease the smell.

Ship tip

Do your research if traveling with children-this was not a family friendly environment for us.

Ports of call

Vancouver (Canada Place), British Columbia

Vancouver port was excellent, we arrived with three days in advance of our cruise. Lots for families to do and explore. Very clean and seemed safe.

Enjoyed the glacier helicopter guided walk. It was rather windy and rainy. Would have been nice if they offered hot tea or cocoa when we arrived back at the main base camp, to help us all warm up after the tour since it was so cold.

Skagway, Alaska

Not enough excursions, we did the white pass train excursion but it was rather slow and boring for my family.

Cruise Glacier Bay

No whales to be seen but scenery was otherwise beautiful. Captain gave a good long time in front of the largest glacier-plenty of opportunity to take photos.

Sorry to hear about your child and the kids’ club. Remember, these are not trained educators with degrees, but merely babysitters. Their training would be very limited. If a child is uncooperative, then they may have no choice but to exclude them from further activities.

They should just make HAL ships adult oriented anyway. So many other lines out there that cater to children and activities anyway.

I can see this could sour my cruise too. I go out of my way to make sure my kids also have a great cruise. That room attendant needs a new job. That one was not for her. Thanks for sharing

At 6 years old they can be taught to listen. Does he do that in school . I've raised 4 very active children but they were not disruptive . I'm sure he's a very sweet boy but they have to be taught when with others they must listen and behave .

If you have cruised on a ship that was a little more kid friendly, maybe go back to that one for a year or two. I agree that the person who talked to you was perhaps a little bit rude.

I know you believe your child is the greatest, but try not to be butt hurt when others do not agree.

Sorry to hear of your disappointing Alaskan cruise. Thank you for your review.

Was not a kid-friendly experience. I had heard that Holland was trying to capture more of the family and multi generational travel sector— based on our experience, they still have a long way to go, starting with hiring staff that understands and works well with young children.
