Review summary

If you told me that I could go back on this exact ship, with this itinerary, and this staff and have the exact same experience I just had, I would return without hesitation. Absolutely recommend this ship, absolutely recommend these ports, and I absolutely recommend spending some time in Rome either before or after.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
We arranged through Royal Caribbean to have transport the port. We were told to be at a hotel at a specific time and we would get transport. My wife and I along with several other couples and families had that hotel as our meeting location. We were then put on a bus where the RC guide assigned to the bus reviewed the embarkation process (what we would need to have out, what we should expect, what additional forms we needed to fill out) along the 45 minute drive from Rome to Cittavecchia. When we arrived, there were no surprises, we easily moved through a short security line of only the people from our bus, got our seapass cards and headed to our cabin.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
Having been on other ships and other cruise lines, you can somewhat know what to expect from cruise dining, but the food and dining experience on the Jewel of the Seas defied our expectations. In the main dining room, we had fantastic servers who were attentive to our needs and very knowledgeable of the chef's great menu. My wife and I can have very different tastes, but each night there was something new on the menu and so much to choose from that we were always happy. They have items on the menu that are there the whole week (standard dinners) but I can't recall ever choosing them from all the wonderful nightly options. RC offers other sit-down/served dining options which we were interested in. We did not go to Izumi or the Chef's Table. Izumi we just didn't ever had a chance to get to, but Chef's table is quite expensive and a main core of their sell is that the Chef pairs wine to each course and as a non-drinker, that doesn't seem like the meal is worth the value for me at least. As for the other restaurants, Chop's Grille and Giovanni's Table, we had wonderful experiences. Chop's Grille gives the high end steakhouse feel and cooks steaks to match. As for Giovanni's, it is advertised as family style, but we soon learned that family style is an option, but you can order meals individually. A big perk here is that all the pasta is handmade. We usually ate breakfast in the Windjammer Cafe, the buffet, mainly because the dining room was a little slower and some days you just don't want to sit with strangers. The staff in the Windjammer was also very attentive and would offer to get things for you if you needed it. A hidden gem was the late-night snacks in the Solarium. We also took the Galley Tour on the last day at sea which came with a bottomless brunch of food. I would highly recommend the tour as it was a great peek behind the curtain and gave a better understanding of how this floating city gets fed. The only cons are the upcharge items that are on the menus sold as premium dinners. Also, charging for room service kept us from partaking in that.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
Everything on the ship was in good condition. The Solarium which prohibits children under 16 was a nice place to relax. The Spa was easy to schedule or reschedule appointments and was well maintained. We enjoyed the on-board art auctions and the art gallery staff from Park West who, atypically from previous experiences, were more interested that we were having a good time than trying to get us to purchase art. (ultimately we did bid and purchase several works of art many of which had no obligation to purchase) The casino was great, except the smoking area was not well indicated and very often people were smoking in the non-smoking areas for a while before being told they needed to move. The staff in the casino was very friendly and made us feel welcome there as well.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
The on-board movies were fairly recent and with a decent variety. The guitarist who was usually in the centrum and sometimes in Schooner's was great to listen to. The shows weren't of any interest to us, though we heard from others on-board that they were great.

Children's Programs

Did not cruise with children.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
From our stateroom attendant to our wait staff in the dining hall, we were always treated in the most welcoming manner. There is not a single staff member who did not try and make our stay as memorable and enjoyable as they could.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
It's a shame that cruise ships continue to get bigger and bigger. There's something really enjoyable about having a ship this size. Nothing is ever too crowded, there's still plenty of things to do, and it's small enough with a large enough staff that everything is always cleaned. Everything was easily located with interactive maps at every elevator.

Cabin / Stateroom

4 out of 5
The cabin was nice. It seems that it had been previously refurbished and there may have previously been a heat lamp in the bathroom but that had since been removed, but the knob remained (and was obviously nonfunctional). The flat screen tv on a swivel made it easy to watch movies or ship informational programs from the bed or from the love-seat. The balcony was always cleaned well.

Ship tip

The Solarium is open until 1:00 AM with cold salads and hot sandwiches for late-night cravings.

Ports of call

Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy

5 out of 5
Rome is a beautiful city. We did not do a RC excursion, but rather stayed in Rome for a couple of days before embarkation. Per my previous comments on embarkation, RC transport to the ship made it very easy to do Rome as you please as long as you want before embarkation and worrying less about getting to the ship.

Santorini, Greece

4 out of 5
We took the Village of Oia excursion. Admittedly, Santorini was one of the major pulls for this trip. Many cruises we had looked at surprisingly didn't stop in Santorini. It is as wonderful and picturesque as you might imagine and we had the perfect weather for it as well. However, while the excursion brought us to the most picturesque area of the island, Oia, it stopped at the winery which wasn't as interesting. It certainly had beautiful views. I wish that this excursion was longer so that we could have more time to have experienced more of Oia. I have no complaints about our guide who was fantastic and very informative, it just all felt so rushed.

Mykonos, Greece

5 out of 5
We did not do an excursion on this port and we do not regret it. Mykonos has a large but walkable port town full of countless stores, tavernas, cafes, and even a museum here and there. There's also a small public beach right in the center of the port. Had we spent the day on a beach excursion or similar, we would have missed some great time in the town. Definitely check out the windmills.

Piraeus (Athens), Greece

5 out of 5
We took an excursion for the "Your Way" transfer to Athens. Because the port is Piraeus, if you get off the ship you're still an easy 30-45 minute drive to Athens. Doing the transfer was unbelievably worth it. We had a guide who basically gave us the bus tour on the drive in pointing out sights to see such as buildings from the last Olympics in Greece. Then when we got to Athens, she lead us up past the Acropolis Museum and gave us a few tips on how to explore the Acropolis and how to get to Plaka which is the marketplace district of Athens. My advice based on our experience if you do this is to go to the Acropolis first as the line will fill up early. The excursion dropped us off early enough that we nearly walked right up to the Parthenon. I'd also say you should get the pass that allows you access to all the historical sites such as the Agora, the Roman Agore, Hadrian's Library, etc. as it's only 10 euros more than the price of just the Acropolis. It's a flimsy piece of receipt paper that you use as entrance to all of these, so be careful and make sure you still go to the ticket booths at all of the sites otherwise they will accuse you of trying to skip the entry fee even though you have already paid for it.

Katakolon (Olympia), Greece

4 out of 5
We did a beach excursion at this port. Katakolon is a small port town, really just two streets of restaurants, cafes, and souvenir shops. The excursion took us to Karoutas where we were able to sit on the beach for the day. We were told that chairs and umbrellas were free, but any refreshments could be purchased at the restaurant. We were also supposed to be there for 3 hours and it was only about 2 hours 15 because it took longer getting off the ship. The other disappointing part of this was that we were informed by a waiter that we had to buy something to eat or drink. We had not been previously advised of this. Basically we were able to just buy a soda so it wasn't a big deal, but if we had been warned in advance, we would have done so in the first place and this wouldn't have been an issue. As for the town, it was very nice with pleasant people Easily walkable and you could sit outside overlooking the blue water and have a nice cool drink of some kind.

Disembarkation

Two Words: Stay Awhile. RC has a program that few take advantage of called the Stay Awhile Program. The SAP allows you to depart later while still getting to take advantage of the ship's amenities. You still need to leave your room by 8:30, but any carry-on luggage you may have with you they will hold for you at the front desk so you don't need to lug it around. It's 39.99 per person but it's essentially a late checkout with food. You still have access to the windjammer for breakfast and lunch and can use the pools. They also allow you to use the spa to shower since you need to be out of your room. This was helpful for us because we had a very late flight that day and preferred not to stay in the airport for 12 hours. We arranged for RC transport to the airport which was also so simple. Because we were leaving late (3:00 PM) they had arranged a car with one other group and we essentially had our own private driver bringing us to the airport in Rome.

Thanks for the review! Doing this cruise next month!

@IsabelVILLA - the transport to the port was $72 USD per person. We had arranged it through our travel agent with CheapCruises. I liked having the benefit of being with a RC shuttle and it definitely helped expedite getting into the port and on the ship. If you're looking to take a taxi from Rome, it's around 130 EURO (possibly more as some taxis we took had a surcharge for luggage). In our case, with 2 people, it comes out to about the same price as it would with a taxi, so no regrets.

Hello, Thank you for your review! I will be going on the same cruise later this month, and only had one question regarding the RC transport from Rome to Civitavecchia you mentioned, how much was it per person? Sincerely,

Cannot get a much more positive recommendation than yours. Good news is, if you keep repeating, you can get some on-board credits so your price will be lower. Now how about that!
