The early dining, at 5:15 is fine for most of the trip, but we had to skip this eating time one night as we were just then arriving at College Fjord, and did not want to miss the glaciers,
Also we did a jeep tour at Skagway up into the Yukon Territory that was just outstanding.
As soon as you board, explore the entire ship. Particularly the adult-only Sanctuary and reserve a full day. You'll love the privacy, comfort, and being taking care of while enjoying the beautiful views.
It rains a lot in Alaska. When it rains and is windy it is really cold. Take an insolated waterproof coat for any excursion on the water and a light jacket for other times. Ask to be seated at dinner with at least 4 other people then you can share stories about their day and excursions.
Is great for someone that doesn't have experience traveling with good appetite. Is to expensive the experience between two people divided by the 7 nights was 400 usd per pax, plus sodas, plus beverages, plus special food, plus tours, for that amount of money you can easly stay in a 5 star hotel .
Highly recommend the early dining. Time to do things following dinner. Some guests had the 'anytime' dining and said they would never to that again. The dining staff have to work you in and sometimes it took a couple of hours to be seated.
For this cruise make sure you bring a drawstring bag and bug repellant if you do the land portion and do the land first. It's hard to adjust from an all inclusive cruise to the land portion.
Traveling Northbound could be even better than Southbound because your cruise would end with the tall mountains and glaciers. Ketchikan was our least favorite excursion. However there is a natural fish ladder, close to the Lumberjack Show, where salmon are going up stream in July and August.
We put our life preservers on the bottom shelves and our clothes on the top ones, which created a cozy little "walk in closet" feeling just outside the bathroom door. We were issued a LOT of papers and invitations, which we kept on top of so that they didn't pile up. You'll love this cruise!
If you choose to do a wine tasting, go only with other wine tasters. They told us I can bring a guest. But the guests are "quarantined" to another table. Very embarassing for all. We managed to convince the "captain" to sit us together.
Eat in the dining room vs the buffet. Buffet times are nice but seating is overcrowded. Food in dining room was much better. Filet in the Bayou Café was the best! Pay little extra for the balcony. Recommend the Seaplane excursion in Juneau, Lodge is great to see. Unlimited bar for heavy drinkers.
Boarding at the beginning of the cruise and disembarkation at the end of
the cruise they do efficiently. Not many activities, bring a good book.
Don't go to Horizon dining room . Not much variety and nothing cooked
to order, eggs get hard under the lights. The service is only what is necessary
If you choose any time dining, either plan to go very early or after 7:45 , or you will encounter very long lines. In hindsight, we would just have selected late dining. That would still allow you time for a pre-dinner cocktail and the early evening production show/entertainment.
