Review summary

Oceania is a great cruise line but the Amazon was definitely disappointing. There is just not much to see and do there. A few animals and an indigenous tribe over a 25 day period is not worth the time or money. Oceania should improve their onboard activities .

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Organized and efficient

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

4 out of 5
Specialty restaurants are free and food is good. Buffets are excellent and staff serves everything so it is clean and germ free. There is lobster at every lunch and dinner for the entire cruise. The main dining room is ok but mainly opted for the buffet most nights.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Oceania definitely needs to improve onboard activities. There are none at all on port days and basically the same activities every sea day.

Entertainment

4 out of 5
Some entertainment was excellent some just ok. This was a 25 day cruise and we saw some entertainers 3 times. Definitely needed more variety.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
Staff is excellent. Service is always excellent and what sets Oceania apart from other cruise lines.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
Very clean ship

Cabin / Stateroom

We had the Owner’s Suite. It is very large and very comfortable and very quiet.

Ports of call

Gustavia, St. Barthelemy

3 out of 5
No excursion and not friendly at all. You are anchored far away from any resorts or the beach.

Castries, St. Lucia

We did zip lining here which was excellent. Very friendly .

Port of Spain

1 out of 5
Dirty city with not much to see. No beach excursions offered, just city and island tours with nothing interesting to see. They should skip this port.

Cruise Amazon River

Santarem, Brazil

4 out of 5
Nice stop but overall there is very little wildlife to see here. Just sloths and monkeys

Boca Da Valeria, Brazil

No excursions available at this port

Manaus, Brazil

3 out of 5
Big crowded city. The opera house and pink dolphins were the best part of this two day stop.

Parintins, Brazil

4 out of 5
Did a private tour here of the city which was fun.

Alter Do Chao, Brazil

3 out of 5
No excursions offered

Devils Island, French Guiana

2 out of 5
No excursions offered but was interesting to explore the old jail on our own.

Bridgetown, Barbados

4 out of 5
Beautiful island with all activities near the port. We did a private tour on Silver Moon Catamaran that was excellent.

St. John's, Antigua

3 out of 5
Ok port. Difficult to walk around as the sidewalks are all chopped up and no one could direct us anywhere.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

3 out of 5
Picked up a city tour right off the ship for 20.00 per person .

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

1 out of 5
Went to LaRomana due to rough waters in Punta Cana. Did an excursion through the ship that was so bad we received a refund after complaining to the ship’s GM after the ship shore excursion manager ignored our complaint. Our friends picked up a taxi off the ship for 40.00 total and had a much better experience and tour that included the same place we went plus additional stops.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Were able to leave quickly

I had a similar experience on the Volendam recently. The Amazon cruise was underwhelming. The OP is correct that several stops didn't offer any excursions. We also ran aground and missed two ports. HAL was also lacking with respect to educational lectures on Brazil. Normally I enjoy my HAL cruises but the Amazon cruise was disappointing.

I can't believe those ports didn't offer excursions. We take one every time we cruise for all ports. Its the only way to see the sights.
