Review summary

So our ship the Freedom of the Seas was lovely! The service impeccable. However, our surprise came when we realized how much money we were made to spend onboard! While we paid for our cruise and had not cruised in over a decade, both my husband and I were highly disappointed that there was literally a charge for everything! EVERYTHING! The moment we stepped on the ship we were met with specialty dining options for hundreds of dollars. Next came 3 days of pushing drink packages that we did not purchase because we would only have 1 or 2 drinks a day. Again, an opportunity to spend hundreds of dollars. Our son opted to drink water instead of the soda package. T shirts were sold, photos taken daily were sold, excursions we expected to buy, and the shops along the promenade all offered items and foods for purchase. Apparently we were out of touch from the days of lobster, steak and other delights nightly at dinner, these are again purchased through specialty dining. The main dining room food was mediocre building to better food on the last few nights. No ice sculptures, no midnight buffet and the pizza truly disappointing. The happy serendipity was that none of us gained weight on this cruise. After reconciling our onboard bill for thousands more in addition to our original booking fee, we decided the best part of the cruise was waking up in a different port each day. That is why you cruise in the first place! We would recommend RCL to family and friends but, we will tell them to expect spending a lot onboard. As far as booking another cruise, probably not...

Absolutely beautiful! We were very happy with our stateroom. and our attendant was wonderful

Ship tip

Bring at least 2 cases of water on board with checked luggage stickers because unless you have a drink package, water is over $4 per bottle on board. We are not cheap people the fleecing of prices was ridiculous.

We did back-to-back cruises on Freedom with one specialty dinner per cruise. We bought some gifts, a couple of formal night photographs, and drinks everyday. We still spent less than $1,000 total for two weeks on Freedom of the Seas.  The casino, jewrelry, Art, designer clothing, all expenditures by choice, are the only ways I can imagine spending thousands on a week on a cruise ship. Years ago, we cruised when there were more free items like 24 hour softdrinks, fruit in cabin, and chocolates on the pillow, but even 20 years ago you still paid for specialty restaurants, alcoholic beverages, and professional photographs. Granted we spend more today for a cruise but compared to other costs, cruise lines have done a reasonable job with costs. As another person mentioned, I would rather keep prices for the tickets down and let big spenders with big budgets contribute 'thousands' to the cruise's revenue for excessive frivolous purchases.

very surprising. I just went on a cruise last month and my total cost was about $300 during the trip. that included gratuities

If all that is included in the price of the cruise, then the cruise will be price higher. I like having to choose what I want.

Your son could have had coffee, tea, hot chocolate, lemonade, or flavored water for free. I take individual packets to flavor my water if I want it flavored. We have only paid for 1 specialty restaurant on any of our cruises---the main dining room or the Windjammer is fine. Lobster is served in the main dining room for free on one of the formal nights & you can get as many as you want. Steak is served every night in the dining room if u want it for free. You don't have to buy any pictures or even allow them to take any--take your own. We sailed on the Allure this past Dec & our bill was $7.89 when we left. T-shirts go on sale for $10 a piece near the end of the cruise. I really don't understand your post. You control what you spend!

I'm still trying to figure out "on board bill for thousands " if you didn't buy any of the stuff mentioned.....

We didn't do any excursions last month nor did we buy any drink packages. You and only you know if you want to pay extra for anything else on the trip. We didn't let anyone pressure us into buying anything that we didn't want.

we cruised last month and spent nothing extra on the ship.

How did you spend "thousands" more if you didn't purchase anything?

vivian15p    7 years ago

You don't have to buy any of those things mentioned. Did you expect them to be included?

We've had plenty of cruises where we've walked off without a bill. The cruises that include things like cocktails and soda - well that's built in the price of the cruise and we've looked they're always noticeably higher than booking through Royal and buying a drink package. Haven't been midnight buffets in many years now. Not sure how your on board bill was "thousands" if as you said you didn't purchase any of those items? We purchased two four night dining packages, two Deluxe drink packages, a photo package and couples massage and all together that was under $1500 (under $1200 if you take off the obc we used) They still serve lobster - complimentary on the second formal night.

You clearly haven't cruises in a while. All of the things you mentioned are now industry standard unless you go on a luxury line. You can also save a lot of money by doing research ahead of time. There are plenty of cheaper excursion options booked through other vendors. You don't need to buy their pictures, just take your own. You can definitely do it all for less.
