Review summary

My husband and I are in our 60's, and my husband is disabled.  Most of the entertainment was for the younger people and children.  However, our favorite place on the ship was the coffee shop, where we met other couples our age and all kinds of coffee's and teas, with some sweets to go with our coffee.  Do do not waste your money on the specialty dining.  Johnny Rockets, was the only one worth the money.  We still enjoyed our vacation very much, and would go again if we get the chance.

Cabin / Stateroom

Everything I expected. Very happy with our room and service.

Ship tip

Don't waste your money on specialty dining. The dining room food is a 5 star quality. Johnny Rocket, is the only one worth paying the extra money for. Also, don't plan on having ice cream from Mr. Sprinkles, there was only one machine and the lines are always long.

Ports of call

Port Canaveral, Florida

Cococay (Cruise Line's Private Island)

1 out of 5
We didn't experience Cococay, the weather was too rough, for the tenders, to transfer.

Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

3 out of 5
No shopping around the port, you have to go into town by transportation.

Philipsburg, St. Maarten

5 out of 5
Nice little shopping area around the port.

As recent empty nesters enjoying off-peak cruising on Freedom of the Seas, we also enjoyed the coffee, food, and the company of those wonderfully experienced in cruising, in life, and in both, at the Cafe Promenade and Sorrento's Pizza.  Additional places where daytime comfort and the opportunity to socialize can be done at your pace, Bolero's is also very nice and so is the Schooner Bar.  Both seem to have regular customers and especially with the Schooner Bar there are daytime events such as trivia contests and music sing alongs that offer entertainment at your pace along with relaxation and the opportunity to meet others at your pace.

Our second cruise on Freedom of the Seas was a 2 week back to back in November/December 2015; we did almost everything, as you would on a standard cruise, during the first week.  We spent the second week catching a few repeats, a few things we missed, and making sure we had a week of relaxation before rejoining the exile of the daily grind. We had heard about this 2 week idea and made friends on our first Freedom of the Seas cruise that were doing the back to back.  We were pleased to find that they were back on Freedom of the Seas for 2 weeks in parallel with our 2 week cruise.    How did that work out?  I can assure you that if possible, we will repeat this on Freedom of the Seas as well as any of the Oasis, Quantum, or Freedom class ships.  These ships are so large and have so much to offer that a 2 week cruise is just about right for us.  Considering the attendance at the back to back cruisers informational meeting, there are many other cruisers that share this concept.

Suggest you try Celebrity, RCCLs sister company that caters to us 'old folks'.

Agreed. Princess is very nice too.

Agree with twhile1 you should try princess and celebrity they are both geared towards a more mature croud. You will find refined dining almost no kids.

You might want to try Celebrity. It's more laid back and geared for a more mature crowd. Much more pampering and there's nothing wrong with that, lol.
