Review summary

You will be bored out of your mind if you are under 65 years of age. There is not much to do on the ship and after a while it becomes redundant and you look forward to the trip being over. I should have selected a different cruise with more activities and more variety of a crowd.

Based on your review I suggest you avoid cruising unless a gang of special dietary needs get together and charters the ship with emphasis on your dietary requirements. Menus are based on the majority of people’s wants, and although they bend over backwards to accommodate people like you (we sat with one), it is limited due to the large number of normal meals being prepared. And how could you down rate kid services if you did not use them?

I have to agree with previous comments. I love the fact that there are no noisy kids, although there have been a few on some cruises. I and space to relax and enjoy the experience. Not listening to thousands of people jostling for space and having bar crawls around the ship.

Agreed with Jeeper1. I am 37 and am about to go on my third HAL sailing to Alaska. HAL’s offerings have been perfect for my personality. I’m not an extrovert. I want a ship with a publicly-accessible forward observation area, a bona fide wrap-around promenade deck, and quiet spaces to curl up with a good book and a dram of Scotch. The ship needs to have a classy, mature, and sophisticated yet not stuffy or pretentious atmosphere. HAL does exactly this, and does it very well. If what you want is one of the behemoths with 6,000 people that are made to look and feel like something other than a cruise ship, with city parks, shopping malls, theaters, theme parks, balcony rooms looking across at other balconies (nothing wrong with that!), then go for one of the cruise lines that specialize in doing so. Don’t expect that from HAL, don’t review them negatively for being something they aren’t and never have tried nor need to be. They serve a different sector of the market, and that sector is well satisfied with what they do. I started with HAL at 36, fully intend to stay with them until 106! :D

I’m 38 and I love HAL, my idea of cruising is to relax on board and do excursions in port. The pictures I see of pool areas on other lines with 500 people in it make me sick. To each their own.
