Review summary

This was our very first time to take a cruise. We will DEFINITELY be taking another. I would recommend Holland America for your consideration in your next cruise. A wonderful ship, crew, food, entertainment, etc.

Embarkation

Very efficient.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

5 out of 5
It was all very good. We did treat ourselves to a dinner at the Pinnacle. I had never had lobster tail and ordered the small one to just see if I liked it. It was an extra $10 on top of the $35 upcharge to eat in the Pinnacle. The last Gala night in the Dining Rooms offered Surf and Turf and had the same lobster tail on the menu. It was ok though because I found out I like lobster tail!

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
My wife took the hands on cooking class, All About Eggs at the America's Test Kitchen. The cost for the class was $39 and you got to eat what you made and keep the apron. I used the fitness center and the hot tubs to help my two brand new knee replacements. I also took two Microsoft classes. We thoroughly enjoyed it all.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
All I can say is BRAVO! Wonderful performers and headliners.

Service and Staff

5 out of 5
We had breakfast served twice to our room. Our Steward, Rif, knew my name almost immediately. Every staff person greeted you with a smile and a hello, good morning or good day etc.

Ship Quality

5 out of 5
One thing I was worried about was waiting for an elevator due to my recent knee replacements. There were 14 elevators on that ship and I never had to wait for more than a minute.

Cabin / Stateroom

5 out of 5
We had friends that had veranda and view rooms and we really felt we had more room in our inside cabin. Especially in the entryway by the bathroom door and the closets. We did discover on the last full day that there were drawers under our bed and storage space.

Ship tip

Check for space under your bed! There are drawers and space for suitcases. I didn't discover that until the last full day!

Ports of call

Seattle, Washington Did not visit port

We went straight from our hotel to the port

Juneau, Alaska

We took the Whale excursion that promised a $100 cash refund if we did not see whales. We not only saw whales but two whales breached side by side!

Sitka, Alaska

5 out of 5
We took the complimentary shuttle to town and walked around. We did visit the Orthodox church and the Bishop's house. Both were fascinating. We also did a bit of shopping.

Ketchikan, Alaska

5 out of 5
We walked to Creek Street and watched a harbor seal swim around in the water. We did do some shopping as we walked back to the ship.

Victoria, British Columbia

5 out of 5
Victoria is a beautiful city. We took the $10 shuttle into the city and walked around and did some shopping. My wife can now say she had been to Canada.

Disembarkation

5 out of 5
We had to have expedited disembarkation due to a very early plane flight. We did not receive portage of our bags to the terminal but had to take our bags off ourselves.
