Diamond Princess overview

Diamond Princess
Diamond Princess is based out of Japan and features many amenities that reflect its heritage. Diamond was recently refurbished in February 2019.

With its dedicated children's programs and activities designed with a multigenerational appeal, Diamond Princess lives up to the fleet's reputation as a family-friendly cruise experience. Diamond Princess launched in 2004 and was refurbished in February 2019. During the multimillion-dollar modernization, this Grand-class ship upgraded its casino, spa, and poolside amphitheater. The ship now offers a new wine menu and Princess luxury beds in all staterooms.

Based out of Japan, many of the ship's amenities reflect its heritage, including the Izumi Bath, an open-air Japanese bath that's the largest of its kind at sea. Cruisers will also be delighted to discover Japanese-inspired activities, such as origami classes, Japanese language lessons, and opportunities to try on a summery kimono known as a yukata. The ship sails out of several Asian ports, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Kobe, Taipei, and Tokyo. It offers cruises throughout Asia, with voyages to Okinawa, Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, and China.

Younger cruisers have their own spaces. These include a teen center and a youth area with a paddling pool. Travelers of all ages will enjoy a round of Princess Links miniature golf or the vibrant cultural immersion of Festivals of the World. In the Movies Under the Stars amphitheater, families can recline on loungers to watch films, concerts, and sporting events. The ship also includes a jogging track, shuffleboard, and a Cybergolf simulator, and its open-air sports court invites friendly competition at volleyball, basketball, and European football.

For time away from the kids, there is The Sanctuary. This is a fresh-air retreat for the over-18 crowd, and at night, there's ample opportunity for adults-only fun at various nightclubs and lounges, including Skywalkers Disco & Nightclub. There's also plenty of entertainment for all ages, including original musical productions as well as guest performers.

Before you book

This ship is best for: With its homeport in Japan, Diamond Princess attracts a diverse, international crowd. Travelers who enjoy mingling with citizens from around the world should enjoy this culturally immersive cruise ship. There's even an Izumi Japanese bath in honor of its homeport.

You should know: Because Diamond draws an international crowd, English speakers may make up a minority of passengers on some sailings. Travelers concerned about a language barrier may prefer one of Diamond's American-based sister ships.

Activities on Diamond Princess

From a Vegas-style casino to Movies Under the Stars, Diamond Princess has activities to appeal to all interests and ages. Fresh-air sports courts provide a place for active travelers to shoot some hoops or compete with other passengers in a game of volleyball. Cruisers who prefer quieter pastimes can grab a poolside lounger or head to the ship's Internet Cafe and Library for some screen time. For travelers who enjoy a show, there's always something happening onboard Diamond. Shows include original musical productions, featured guest performers including magicians and comedians, and the vibrant Festivals of the World.

Diamond Princess dining

Mealtimes on Diamond Princess are all about variety. The ship's inclusive dining choices are numerous and diverse. Travelers seeking a classic onboard dinner experience can choose Princess' traditional dining option. It seats diners at fixed times, letting them get to know their tablemates and wait staff throughout the voyage. For families who value flexibility, Anytime Dining offers cruisers freedom to dine when and with whom they choose each day.

The menu at the ship's main dining room features dishes crafted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone. The Horizon Court offers ever-changing but always-delicious selections at its all-day buffet. More casual meal options are available at Trident Grill and Prego Pizzeria, a Princess favorite that serves pizza made with hand-tossed dough and fresh ingredients. Several onboard specialty restaurants are also available for cruisers seeking a unique dining experience. A Mediocre Experience by scmli0614

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Diamond Princess

The cruise was too long with too many sea days. The ports were not exciting at all. Could have stayed overnight in Taipei and Hong Kong, and skip the port in Toba and the first two ports in Vietnam. Will not choose this ship at all in future.

Disappointed Trip by yingyaoh

There were a few ports not worth visiting because of limited points of interests. Restaurant service staff need a lot of training or retraining. some updates needed for the ship

Nebula cruise by shapiro6

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Diamond Princess

We were overall disappointed because we missed two ports, the sail they the straits, and lost money $100) when we bought tickets from the Tokushima city festival before, festival excursions were offered. Also disappointed in the amount of the future cruise credit (25% off the fare only), believe a 40% credit is more in line with what we missed.

Bring your own hair dryer unless you actually like those crappy ones that are attached to the wall.
