Terrible food on an older ship that is not being kept up- and mattresses that are lumpy and worn out. What happened Princess?!!!!!

Review summary

Sadly, Crown Princess has seen it's time come and go.. It is old, out dated and Princess has cut way too many corners... Adding more specialty restaurants would help, but really concentrating on food quality would go a long way to helping this ship and most likely the entire cruise line.. Paying almost $6000 for a 10 day cruise is a lot of money for a small outdated balcony cabin that has lumpy, sagging old mattresses and a small old tv... Drydock is needed immediately to fix the physical features of the ship, new crew members are needed to fix the terrible, unconcerned attitude of most of the staff and new chefs are needed to create better menus and ensure better tasting food is a reality. The cruise also needs to do a better job of ordering supplies- they ran out of over 20 difficult wine bottle options, and many food items were unavailable as well by the last day of the cruise..

Embarkation

Very easy and quick- delightful experience.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
This was my 17th cruise- and the worst food- by far... We ate at Crown Grill twice- the first night was very good, the second night was terrible.. Sabbitinis was awful- Princess has changed the menu- it no longer feels like an Italian restaurant (This used to be my favorite specialty restaurant on ships- the old menu was awesome!!!)... the choices were awful and the food itself was worse... Main dining room was inconsistent at best.. Buffet was a joke- small, limited options, terrible food, the buffet area itself is about 95 degrees- so never fun to actually try and get food... rude servers.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
pool decks were nice- a lot of pools to choose from...Fitness center was nice, but low ceiling meant using the equipment was difficult for someone like me who is 6'3"... Spa area was odd, no robes or slippers for men... So if you changed in the locker room- you had to wait in the waiting are in just a towel around your waist... very weird... Our massage therapist was not trained.. She just rubbed all over with way too much oil... I had to shower afterwards and wash my clothes (no robes) as I had oil all over my clothes when the massage was done.

Entertainment

2 out of 5
boring, and bad..

Service and Staff

2 out of 5
Our cabin attendant Glen was awesome- one of the best we have ever had... Truly wonderful. Laura in Crown Grill was friendly and fun to work with.. The rest of the crew needs a vacation from their jobs.. rushed, rude, uninterested in the guests experience..

Ship Quality

1 out of 5
So outdated... This ship needs a drydock stat!!!!! Seriously, our mattresses were so old the springs were coming through.... Balcony rooms are tiny-no sitting area... No covered pool area, so in cold climates, you are very restricted on what you can do... over crowded buffet area meant no tables to eat at during peak times. There are only 2 real specialty restaurants on board- and the main dining room is bad- so they need more specialty dining to offset the bad food in the main dining areas. The ship did seem clean though..

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
Mattresses need to be replaced immediately.. small television, no sitting area, old bathroom with no luxury feel at all... comparing to hotels, I would say this cabin felt like a super 8 motel...

Ship tip

Stay away from this ship.... Best tip I can give.... Princess has really gone down hill- it has been 13 years since I last cruised Princess and I can safely say it will be at least that long before I sail them again- if ever... They are old school and not keeping up their food quality or their ships.... Time has pasted this company by....

Ports of call

New York, New York

It's NYC- amazing to say the least.. Awesome view of the Statue of Liberty when we departed..

Newport, Rhode Island

Loved this port- beautiful homes, awesome little town- but you have to tender and the lines to get back to the ship are insane.. We waited 1 hour and 5 minutes in line, in the sun in order to get back on the tender... Princess was completely unprepared for the amount of people that were trying to return to the ship- and that was 2 hours before the ship was set to leave... Massive lines...

Boston, Massachusetts

Beautiful city... cruise terminal is a little far, but easy to access.

Bar Harbor, Maine Did not visit port

Fog- this seems to be common as the cruise before ours had to cancel as well- it is a tender port- so cancellations are frequent.

Saint John, New Brunswick

The ship docks right in the middle of the town- which is awesome- the town itself has a bad case of the ugly's... sorry... Just not a great looking town... We rented a car to go out to th Bay of Fundy- which was nice.. but far.

Halifax, Nova Scotia

Absolutely beautiful... Peggy's cove is awesome- but very crowded... lakes, trees, water ways, etc... and the city itself is cool as well.. but be prepared for hills...

Sydney, Nova Scotia

Disembarkation

Having overnighted on the ship before disembarkation, I thought the process would be easy, but true to form for the entire cruise- we were delayed...

We are also going the 25-11. These comments are very disappointing. We’ve been on the Crown several times and it’s one of our favorites! We have 4 cruises on the Crown over the next 4 months, so I’m hoping the food and the beds are “cruise-worthy”! We have a mini-suite, but the bedding has always been superb! They replaced the mattresses fleet-wide recently. The food has always been good. The specialty restaurants -there are 2- superb.

Wow Will be aboard the Crown oct 25 to nov 11 from Quebec to ft Lauderdale....hope my 2 weeks will be better. The "sagging old mattresses " is what's bothering me most. My poor old back is already crying. Stay tuned. You will hear from me no matter what I find.
