Unfortunately based on my experience this cruise ship is worse than Diadema and Medditeranea.

I just came back from... by LudoCruise

Sail date: /
Ship: Costa Fortuna

I just came back from a week on the Costa Fortuna. It was my first cruise on this ship and probably also the last. the food was of average quality at best. The music in especially the main bar was even below that level. A singer sang out of tune. Not once, but many times. I booked 5 excursions with Costa in advance. Three of them were cancelled by Costa. One even without informing me. But I can't be negative about everything. The cabin was large enough, clean and comfortable. The steward was friendly and helpful, just like the other crew members.

Worst Cruise by chadacraig

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Actually, we enjoyed the trip. The cruise experience was very dissatisfying. The dining room was OK the food was very small portions and average at best. Our server Lee did an awesome job. Everyone that we encountered on the staff was courteous and kind, however, Most of the passengers, did not speak English and work exceptionally rude and discourteous. Having read other reviews we were not really expecting much from Costa. We thoroughly enjoyed the ports of call. The buffet was sorry. The entertainment was worse. This is the first time that I have cruised (16 cruise) where there was not coffee available in the buffet area. Oh, they had dispensers but there was not one time when I went for coffee that it was operating. Also, the only pizza they had to offer you had to pay for. It was marginal. The birthday hours were very limited. Overall, there were very few dining choices or options. If you have cruised other cruise lines in the past and you are cruising with Costa, go into it with the attitude that it is going to be way less than what you have been used to. We chose this particular cruise because of the itinerary and the price. We purchased a mini suite for a very reasonable price and it was fine. I will steward did an OK job. We had to ask for wash clause the first several days before he brought them without asking. Also, we had our do not disturb sign up one day and he knocked on the door wanting our shower curtain (830 in the morning) Telling us he would replace it later on in the day. We had not taken our showers yet, I told him that was unacceptable. Other than those two things he did a good job. It is highly unlikely that we will ever choose Costa it again.

Costa Fortuna Norwegian Fjords by CruiseCouple2

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

Almost all our cruises have been on different cruise lines, and this was our first on Costa. Overall we were satisfied, but this line is the least desirable of all the ones we have been on.

I have read many reviews before taking this cruise and one of the biggest complaints was the food. We considered the food comparable to other cruises. There was definitely more of a leaning to Italian-type food, but there were always many selections. My wife does not care much for pasta and pizza, but found plenty of times she could choose her favorite main course, beef. Although it was not always on the dinner menu, you typically could find it at least once per day. Fish was also frequently available and there were also vegetarian options available. The desserts were very desirable and plenty to choose there too. The biggest complaint about food at our table was two-fold: apparently Costa has phased out the buffet option at dinner time. Therefore, to eat dinner you must go to the restaurant. That didn't matter to us, but I can see how it would matter to others. The second issue was that after breakfast (except for the one hour "tea-time"), the only coffee available had to be purchased from the bar as no ready-made coffee was at the buffet. In my view these are clearly cost-cutting and revenue-generating measures they have taken, and perhaps will settle well with the southern Europeans on board, but I don't see those steps flying with Americans. However, I do not know if this was a Costa-wide change or only for predominately European-attended cruises (ours was about 90% or so European).

The service was fine. Staff was courteous and helpful. We never had any problem with them.

The entertainment quality was mixed. One constant was that the volume was much too loud on all the shows.

This cruise had the least onboard activities I have ever seen on any cruise. There were things to do, but the depth of selection was low. We used the library, as we always do, but was the smallest we have seen.

We didn't do any excursions, but this itinerary was the best we have ever done. I would recommend that any cruiser who has never done this itinerary to get to it once in your lifetime, though not necessarily with Costa.

The ship was clean, but the layout design was at the weakest of the ships I have been on. First, there was no way to walk completely around the deck on any single level. We like to do this when going for a walk. Further, when moving from one end of the ship to another, you are forced to use deck 5 which forces you by the casino (maybe on purpose?) and through choke points that create traffic jams. We have been on higher capacity ships that have felt less crowded.

Embarkation and Disembarkation went smoothly, and the tender process was fine too.

Bottom line is we enjoyed our cruise, but would rather choose another cruise line for our future cruises.

The Best Cruise by vtreidy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Europe

My husband and I enjoyed the Costa Fortuna 14 day cruise to Iceland very much.  We just wanted to give a big thank you to the many staff members who graciously helped us out and were kind to us at all times.  We were the only Americans on board yet we had a marvelous time.  Thanks to our room captain Ari from room 1162.  Thanks to our Pizza captain who we enjoyed chatting with on stormy nights.  Thanks to Alma Lopez for always being so gracious. Thank you to our American-Greek speaking representative.  Thank you to the 9:00p.m. waiters who were always very professional.  Best wishes for many more exciting cruises!  Vicky and Tim Reidy

Never again on Costa cruise by Comfy

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

This is one kind of cruise I'll never recommend anyone to go on.  It's not suppose to be called a cruise but the official name should be: "SHUTTLE CRUISE"  We got on the cruise on the first of May having big hope of enjoying the next seven days but each day we stopped, new people keep embarking and disembarking and announcements in more than 5languages keep coming in and out more than usual.

Destinations promised were not kept.  We left home with the greatest hope to see more of Europe especially Malta and on the day that we suppose to go there, an announcement was made that we had navigational problem and have to go somewhere else which in normal circumstances suppose to be a port closer to us, we were about 3hrs from Malta but we ended up in Palermo which took us more than 7hrs(Go figure, I thought if there is an emergency, you go to the nearest port, airport or train station but not the farthest one)We did enjoyed Marseille and Barcelona though, thank God that they had enough passengers to pick up from those two ports maybe it would have been another story like the one of Malta.

Food wise:Horrible, I'm not a fan of Pizza at home but because we were going to Italy, I promised myself to indulge in pizza for the first time since Italy is known to be home of pizza, that was not the case.  The pizzas we got was the worst pizza ever made daily, we were told if we want the authentic pizza we have to go to pizzeria and buy it for four euro,

Entertainment sucks except the ones offered in the theater hall on deck 3/4/5 but the timing is odd, all other entertainment were worst the ones you see offered for free on the street or inside the metro.  Employees were cold, inattentive and doesn't seems happy to be there at all, when you need help they never help but refer you to someone else.

Pool is the worst pool I've ever seen on any cruise lines(too small and the ones made for adults were full of kids jumping in out and throwing dangerous items all around, the slide was unavailabe throughout the cruising time )We could not wait to get out of the cruise and we never look back because there is absolutely no urge to come back ever again.  I'm still having headache up till now, the NOISE POLLUTION on the cruise is than open market or airplane noises.

Rude and unhelpful staff by Traveller111

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

I will never cruise on Costa again.  The staff was unhelpful and rude.  Although they published that the aft pool was "adults only", it (and the entire ship)  was always full of screaming children.  Staff laughed and made no attempt to control this.   We never knew which elevators would be closed for the use of crew transporting luggage at every port, or which other elevators were open.  The ship was difficult to navigate compared to other lines.  The only dinner option was a 2-hour dining room visit at which we were rudely refused water without a 3 euro payment.  The safe could not be accessed by both myself and my friend - only one of us.  The drawer pulls were difficult with arthritic hands.  Now, I see pending charges on my credit card that should not be there.  My previous experiences with Royal Caribbean were excellent -  the opposite of Costa.

UNFORGETTABLE by Fernando59

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

Excellent food in restaurants and self-service. The Great Club exceded our expectations: food, dinnerware, service... everything first class.

Entertainment activities are outstanding, specially those at night featuring several bars, live music, dancing and discotheque... fun was endless. We enjoyed every night the live music with Tiziano and his band: excellent music selection, great interpretation. Need to mention also Giuseppe and the Entertainment team as remarkable. We enjoyed the shows as well.

Fairly good drink selection. Room for improvement.

We didn't like when the shopping center personnel put the selling tables of duty free in the corridor making difficult to walk from the theater to the bars and restaurants área.

Costa cruise line has to be the worst cruise line. by YellowFinch1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Other (Asia/Africa/Middle East)

We bought this cruise because of the ports they were stopping at.  After we paid in full for the ticket, Egypt was dropped and replaced with Jordan and Israel.  Ok, Petra and the Dead Sea were great. Then at the end of the cruise Crete and Naples were canceled.  So we ended up with 10 days at sea. We were told this is typical  Costa to save on port fees. Then they say they will give each cabin 100 Euro per cabin as a credit.  So if you paid for the cheapest cabin or the most expensive  you received the same. Very poor marketing.  The two days of last performances in the Theater were canceled because passengers from Europe had a revolt and took the stage. The Captain finally showed up and blamed Corporate . Poor, poor management.

The food is not great. They have canceled dinner on the Lido. Only pizza there at night. You also do not get coffee or tea at lunch or dinner. I was told to go up to Lido at lunch if I wanted a cup of tea. Another bit of information, the coffee and tea machines are shut off on the Lido most of the time. If you want a hot drink you must go to the bar to buy it.

Our cabin steward was great as was our cabin,we had a balcony so we could escape. This is an old ship that needs refurbished. The pools and hot tubs were dirty with grease on walls.  Let me repeat this is the bottom of the barrel of cruise lines.  Carnival Corporation should be ashamed.

A very ugly ship by EulaliaE

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Other (Asia/Africa/Middle East)

We have did 9 wonderful cruises, with Royal Caribean, Celebrity and Cunard, and enjoyed them very much. This is the only cruise we have not enjoyed because the ship is decorated in a very cheap and kitsch way, and for us it is not pleasant to be surrounded by that kind of cheap furniture and decor. We never stay at one , two, or three star hotels or motels and that is what this ship looks like

Wht food? by AngScottLuanneJ

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

I've been on several cruises with different companies and Costa is the worst experience I've ever had.

When food was available, which was extremeley limited in it's hours, it was nearly uneatable. There were times when I wandered around the ship looking for something to eat other than what they called Pizza to be available. The food in the dining area was so aweful we couldn't eat it on some evenings.

Costa Cruises really not for Americans by EileenP3

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Western Mediterranean

We were really disappointed with our recent cruise on Costa Fortuna.  The ship was fine and the staff was very nice (mostly) but the other cruisers were extremely rude.  They say Americans are rude - well next to the passengers on this cruise we are absolutely the nicest people on earth.

This was our first time to Europe so the atmostphere on the boat really put a damper on our vacation.

We were also surprised to note that at dinner time, there is only the main dining room or the resturant that you have to pay for.  The buffet was not an option.  Also the only thing available late at night was pizza NOTHING ELSE!

I guess that's all I have to say about it except that Costa should not market to Americans.

Great Cruise by lamisfleischer

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

The English speaking person assigned to help with activities was really good and went out of her way to help. My husband and I liked the entertainment and also the piano bar area. The excursion were great except for a couple of times we had two guides speaking the English language and Spanish or Russian. This took away from really being able to ask questions or really understand what we are seeing.

Cruise from Hell by edsellner

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Northern Europe

When we embarked I found the smallest cabin I ever saw cabin 7214 not even an area to put our baggage. We are a family of 4. When I complained they told me there were no cabins available. I told them my family wanted to leave the ship if this was the only room available. So then they showed us a suite cabin 7249, but told us we had to pay an additional 2000 dollars. I only agreed because my only other choice was to go home after spending 4 thousand dollars to fly to Copenhagen. After moving to the new cabin we went to dinner but did not find anything on the menu that appealed to us or our kids, so we went to the Buffet deck 9 and found it closed. We then tried to use room service. First nobody wanted to answer the phone, so we tried to call customer service and again nobody would answer the phone. I walked down to the customer service desk and made my order and after an hour waiting we finally got our room service. The next day we went to breakfast at the Deck 9 buffet and asked a crew member to clear a table so we could sit and eat. He told us see someone else, and when we finally found someone else they acted like it was not their job either. The menu on your cruise was one of the worst I ever ever known. We ate a lot at the pizza bar most of the cruise. On the 5th day we noticed brown water coming out of the faucet in our bathroom. We were told it was because they were working on the pipes during the night. We purchased a tour package and out of the 3 places we went 2 of them just seemed to be in a hurry to get our tour over and back to our ship. All in all this was the worst cruise me and my family have ever been on and we have been on 5 other cruises on Carnival and Royal Carribean before.

Great Cruise by AlvinJ1

Sail date: / Traveled as: Couple
Ship: Costa Fortuna / Destination: Europe - Eastern Mediterranean

Crusie was Venice-Bari-Katakolon-Santorini-Rhodes-Dubrovnik-Venice; 7 days-8 nights. The service was excellent. the food was good. Variety of food and services were good. I recomment taking the drink package if you like to have a care free vacation. It allows you the coffees, sodas, and alcoholoic drinks without the hassle of the cost and service fees of each drink (about 20 Euros per per per day). The cleanliness and constant upkeep made our trip enjoyable. We upgraded to a outside balcony room. This was an excellent choice for my wife & I. It provided more room and the constant view of the sea ans ports.
