Review summary

Our Family of 5 booked this cruise two months before the departure date, and our room was one of three left on deck one, at the time being a Platinum member I just new we would get upgraded, to a nicer location than what we had, At the time of booking we were told by the carnival rep to call back frequently to see if there were any other rooms available for (5) people, as there were none at the time of booking, we called twice a week until the day of departure, nothing was available and we were told at that time to board and ask the customer service desk, what they can do for us. we did, and was also told at the desk "awww" that Carnival had employee service people working on board and all of the rooms were being used by their employees, so we would have to stay in our reserved room. That wasn't what I had in mind, being a platinum member, but ok we worked with it. Being past carnival cruisers we just new we could overlook the room and still have a wonderful time.

The ship is indeed beautiful but so many of the wonderful things about carnival was taken away and or up charged, for no apparent reason. Charging $2.00 for a cup of tea after dinner is ridicules, having no dish in our bathroom of dental freebee's ie tooth paste, or mouth-wash, was disappointing, as well as scaling way down on the variety of food in the dining room, passing off a gourmet dinner in the dining room with fried chicken, that was way way over cooked, and it almost felt like a frozen from a box piece of weaver chicken, is un-acceptable, filet mignon that you couldn't even tell was a meat product, it looked like a piece of already chewed overcooked slab of fat and grizzle, served on my plate for dinner un-acceptable, offering tofu as a main course dinner option and overcooking just about everything that came on a plate and served for me and my family's dinner, is completely, un-acceptable, the service at our table was awful, and we were at most times leaving close to last out of the dining-room because of the poor service, it was terribly slow, our waiter was very un-attentive at times and seemed to care more about the larger tables that our 5 person table, Shame on you Carnival. what happened to having three different people taking care of your dining table at dinner? we felt that we were almost forced to pay the up charge for hopefully a better meal, we kept the faith, hoping and praying that tomorrow's dinner would be better than the night before, but that never happened for us, night after night a disappointing meal, i was almost embarrassed because i was the one that wanted to cruise again with carnival, my husband didn't.

So between the nickel and dimming everywhere around us and the disappointing meals on this cruise it has completely pushed my husband and i over the edge and after so many years of cruising with Carnival we will now look at other cruise lines for our future vacations.

Wise up Carnival and stop being so cheap with your guests that work all year for their one week vacation, and spoil your guests, like you use to.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

1 out of 5
The food served on the lido deck was good, but in the dining room was horrible, as well as the service.

Onboard Activities

5 out of 5
we loved the cruise director I forget her name but she was the best we ever had.

Entertainment

5 out of 5
the clubs were nice, drinks were on point at the bar's, the comedy shows were great, we had alot of fun at the deck party's, love the big screen by the pool, with the music very nice and relaxing.

Children's Programs

we didn't use the kids program

Service and Staff

1 out of 5

Ship Quality

3 out of 5
the ship seemed to be sort of clean, but there were way too many food plates and bar cups on or around the pool and lounge chairs, what happened to the staff? cleaning up after people, even in the lido area tables full of plates and no one sitting and eating because of it, we asked a few different times during the week for a staff member to come and clean up our table, because no one was present to clean up after the table's use.

Cabin / Stateroom

1 out of 5
i was very disappointed with the room, your five person room was simply a four person room with a mattress on the floor for my 22 year old daughter, We complained about it, she had a terrible time sleeping on that, we did receive a new mattress for her to sleep on but that in no way is a five person room my son constantly stepped on her because if that set up, she was not a happy camper, and neither was I hearing her complain over and over.

Ship tip

My tip to any future carnival cruiser would be, Carnival has gotten very cheap, do yourself a favor make reservations at the specialty restaurant's and pay the up-charge fees to get a decent meal for dinner, I'm sorry we didn't and were horribly disappointed, with the meals and staff attentiveness.

I'm still dumb founded they are upset that they didn't get free tooth paste and mouth wash.....did no one bring their own?

scmom    8 years ago

Five people in one room? I didn't know they had rooms (cabins/staterooms) for five unless they were suites

A lot of this still comes back to expectations. The Carnival ships are the entry level for the carnival Corporation.  All of us know they have many other Cruise Lines that a person can move up to. Yet we all seem to want to chastise them for trying to keep the carnival ships affordable and generally more casual than the other lines.

You don't even have to guess how the vote would come out on Guys Burgers vs tablecloths

taacman    8 years ago

Then why did you chastise those for fully expressing their honest opinions?

peaceharmonync    8 years ago

This forum is for people to freely express their opinions good or bad and it's really sad to see someone else made fun of or chastised for "their" honest opinions....feel free to give your honest thoughts and let the travelers decide for themselves....

I'm not platinum, but I've already seen fairly significant differences in food quality and temperature between Carnival ships. Also, not sure which line you will go to since posts about food quality for RC and Norwegian are also all over the map.

I think your cruise went down hill when you expected something that you didn't get. I cruise Carnival because its fun not for freebies in a basket or upgrades, which I actually received more of when I wasn't Platinum. One day I'll try another line regardless of the cost because it doesn't seem to be a great big difference but right now I'm looking for FUN!

Sorry things didn't work out, but not sure why you thought the upgrade was possible; when, by your own admission, they advised repeatedly that the ship was full. Who was staying in the rooms isn't really relevant. The point is they weren't available. I'm sure Carnival would have been more than happy to accommodate your family and collect the additional revenue if possible. It's unfortunate to have allowed this to impact the entire vacation. I once got equally annoyed at a cruise line for something that was their fault, but I still shouldn't have allowed it to cast shade over the vacation. After all, to your point, it is a vacation. So may as well try to get the most enjoyment out of it.

It is unfortunate that the cruise lines do not take care of those who pay their salaries...I hate to say this BUT one way to get better service may be to stop following the cruise lines wish to "prepay gratuities". I know this is a sore spot with people but how do you know the tips all get where we think? Are these tips given in envelopes as cash? Tips were always under the table "gifts" to help waiters salieries because they were underpaid and for many years were not required to turn into the IRS. Salaries were low compared to what the cook, dishwashers etc made and this was how they made a halfway living. Many upscale restaurants now frown on tipping as is the custom in other countries than the USA. Please I don't want to be bashed nor create a Hugh discussion here...just something to think about while complaining about the service we receive and think should be better...perhaps the crew thinks the same way.

We're offered upgrades and have FANTASTIC meals and service. It's probably because we don't repeatedly say "...as a Platinum member..." IJS

kknorr0320    8 years ago

I think expecting an upgrade is a bit much. If it happens great but I wouldn't ever count on it.

The Sunshine was not my favorite either....

As platinum you are well aware that working out service issues is best by speaking directly with Carnival. Just a guess that unless you intend to spend far more, you'll see much the same as the industry tightens its belt. I choose Carnival well aware of price versus value. Good luck as you begin your new search and if you find something special, pleasr let us know.

I too am Platinum and we did get an upgrade to an ocean suite on the Sunshine several cruise ago. We had booked an interior room on Lido deck and they had this suite available for a little extra and we upgraded. My cruise shopper with Carnival was who I have always used for booking. I suspect my upgrade was due o the fact Carnival could sale my Lido interior much easier than the suite.

peaceharmonync    8 years ago

I agree with you 100%...Carnival was on its way up 2 years ago but has fallen back down...on this cruise MDR food and service has been really bad...the entire cruising industry is cutting back on everything except prices...on someone new to cruising, things may not matter but for the experienced cruiser, it's very noticeable and disappointing!

davenjen    8 years ago

Hey others are just as bad. One cruuse line you know who u r offered someone money to change cabins then phoned them on way to embarkation to say they couldn't honour the payment but still changed cabins shame on cruise lines

banaford    8 years ago

We are platinum as well. Never ever have we been upgraded, or even offered. They have not done the freebies in at least 2 yrs. It is sad, but please fill out their questionnaire. Maybe they will turn back around.
