Carnival Radiance overview

By Cruiseline.com - Updated Mar. 6, 2020

Scheduled to launch in the spring of 2020, Carnival Radiance will be a fully-refurbished overhaul of Carnival Victory. The biggest upgrades will emphasize casual dining and onboard family fun (two of Carnival’s specialties), with the most exciting addition being the very first Big Chicken at sea, an all-new fried chicken venue created in collaboration with Carnival’s Chief Fun Officer Shaquille O’Neal. Other new additions to Radiance include the popular Carnival staple RedFrog Pub, a full WaterWorks aqua park with two 200 foot-long waterslides, and an upgraded connectivity system for faster internet access.

The lineup of dining options and onboard activities will look familiar to seasoned Carnival sailors: BlueIguana Cantina, Guy’s Burger Joint, and Guy’s Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse are the top casual (and free) options, while Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse, Bonsai Sushi and the Cucina del Capitano are slightly more formal choices that come with an extra cost. Kids will stay busy with age-specific activities in the Camp Ocean youth clubs and playing sports and games on the SportSquare deck, while adults can find a sweet escape at the adults-only Serenity Retreat, in the upgraded Cloud 9 spa (now with more treatment rooms and an expanded thermal suite), or at one of the several lounges around the ship.

Once out of dry dock, Radiance will operate a number of Mediterranean sailings from Barcelona before crossing the Atlantic to spend the summer sailing from New York to the Caribbean, Cuba, and Bermuda, as well as Canada and New England cruises during fall. Then, Radiance will depart New York and sail a single voyage in October from Norfolk, Virginia, before continuing to head south to Port Canaveral where it will sail Caribbean and Cuba itineraries.

Before you book

Why sail on Carnival Radiance: Families with kids young and old, along with couples and groups of friends looking for a festive atmosphere. Radiance is also significantly smaller than most of the modern cruise ships debuting today, so it’s perfect for passengers who want the newest amenities without having to share them with 4,000+ other passengers.

You should know: While the passenger profile on Mediterranean sailings may attract fewer children and party animals than Carnival sailings in the Caribbean, travelers looking for a sophisticated and tranquil vacation should still look elsewhere.

Underwhelmed in General by muljishaila08

Sail date: / Traveled as: Family (older children)
Ship: Carnival Radiance

This cruise was supposed to be mother and son time. It did not meet expectations due to the dining, food and entertainment standards. We ended up watching movies in our cabin which was very claustrophobic. Lessons learned. We would never book an interior stateroom every again. The entertainment was not up to par. We enjoyed our much needed time together. The port experience was wonderful. We went horseback riding at the Banditos Ranch. Grateful for our time together. Staff members were all wonderful.

Loud & Confusing Ship Layout by livevertically7

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Carnival Radiance

The ship layout if VERY confusing and they place the casino in the middle of course for various reasons but you then are forced to walk through secondhand cigarette smoke! Which I find this very unhealthy, dangerous and disgusting! The crowd of people are mainly loud and obnoxious. If you want a party boat, take the Carnival. If you want something more mature and quieter, DO NOT choose Carnival! I will never sail Carnival again!

FUN Short CRUISE TRIP!!! Best for Beginner Cruise Riders!!! by DoctorDon

Sail date: / Traveled as: Singles/Friends
Ship: Carnival Radiance

I would definitely book Carnival Radiance again in the future. Why? Because that ship docks behind Queen Mary! Other cruise ships you have to go to San Pedro/Terminal Island. At least Carnival Radiance is located at an iconic area in Long Beach, which is more touristy than San Pedro. Next time if I ride the Radiance, I'm gonna book the package that have a roundtrip from Long Beach to Ensenada & Catalina & back. Overall, great cruise. Will definitely ride again!!!

Keep an open mind, there is a chance there will be changes to ports, shows, etc. just plan to go with the flow. Also on embarkation day the Red Frog Pub has happy hour from noon til 2pm, great time to grab your fishbowl.

This cruise was the best. It was our first cruise and I think we hit the lotto. It was everything we had hoped for and more. This is definitely the cruise if you want a lasting great impression of what a great cruise should be like.
