Review summary

Our 9-day cruise on Anthem of the Seas was our fourth Royal Caribbean cruise.  If it had been our first, it woudl have been our last.

The customer service on board was awful - - from the Guest Services desk to the Starbucks barista - - we were continually disappointed.

The food was mediocre at best if you weren't in one of the speciality restaurants with an upcharge.  In addition, getting reservations for even the "complimentary" dining rooms was difficult.

Royal Caribbean has certainly started having a "class system" on this ship.  Suite guests have a separate dining room (where lobster, escargot, etc. is offered), in addition to their own private sundeck and lounge.  My husband and I spent over $6,000 for our balcony room, and felt as if we were treated like lower class citizens.

The Solarium (adult only area) was very disappointing.  While it is beautiful, it is all glass and heats up like a sauna.  The pools in this area are far too warm, and therefore, if you want to cool down, you have to go to the family pool and deal with the screaming kids.

The hot tubs in the main areas were always crowded with children.  Certainly not a relaxing experience.

As a recovering alcoholic, I upgraded my drink package to get Starbucks.  Unfortunately, the only Starbucks on the ship is located on the 4th deck, and the pool is on the 14th deck.  I asked on several occasions if I couldn't PLEASE get two iced coffees so as not to have to spend so much time traveling between decks (especially given the fact that TWO elevators were out of service our entire cruise), and they would not give me the coffees.

Likewise, while on Haiti, soda was the last thing brought to the island (alcohol was everywhere), and even then, I couldn't get a can of soda or a bottle of water.  I had to drink it out of plastic cups.  Keep in mind, my husband had no problem getting cans or bottles of beer.

Seating for the evening shows that don't require reservations is almost impossible to find unless you get to the venue an hour in advance.  Even the shows which require reservations have limited seating with a decent view if you don't get there at least an hour in advance.  Just what we all want to do - - sit around for hours waiting for shows to start on our vacation so that we can actually see the performance.

The shore excursion in Bermuda was a waste of money.  We chose the shuttle to Horseshoe Bay.  The excursion only gave you four hours on the beach, and our shuttle was over 30 minutes delayed in leaving because ONE guest showed up late.  Thus, our time on the beach was cut short.  When we arrived at the destination, we found out that an airconditioned taxi ride to and from the beach was only $7 per person.  That's all our shore excursion included and it was approximately $40 per person - - and if we'd gone on our own, we wouldn't have been tied to the timeframe of the excursion.

The cleanliness of the public areas leaves a lot to be desired.  The hallways were always cluttered with room service dishes, and the bathrooms near the pools were at times downright disgusting.

The glass on our balcony wasn't cleaned once while we were on board, and I don't think it was cleaned before we left.  We couldn't even see out of it.  In addition, with the new "smart technology" on board the ship, if we wanted our balcony door open, the air conditioning in our cabin wouldn't work.  In the past, we enjoyed sleeping at night with the breeze from the balcony.  This wasn't an option on Anthem.

I could go on and on with the disappointing experience we had on Anthem of the Seas, but I think what I've said above will give you a good idea of what our experience was.  The common theme among guests we met who had cruised in the past (one woman had taken 38 cruises) was that they would NEVER sail on Anthem of the Seas again, and if Royal Caribbean's customer service on this ship is what it's like on their other ships, we won't be sailing on Royal again.

I was very restricted on what I could actually do because I was traveling with my 21 month old and still had a fabulous time.

Went the same week and had the opposite experience with everything you mentioned. Just another negative person.

Exactly Kodak7!

Ain't that the truth

Wow, 6k. I can see why you're not happy. Booked for December 9th and got a great balcony, midship on 9th deck for 75% less. Plus limited kids and much warmer than CT weather. When you have 4000+ on a ship you have to do your due diligence and book, plan early. If you were home would you not show up an hour before a Show? I'm glad to read all the reviews, both bad and good as have learned much. Will be 1st time on the Anthem. Plan on enjoying the cruise either way. Lol, bad day at sea is still better than a good day at the office...........

People keep posting about the elevators.....they have been out since February.....they were out on my cruise in April..... still out in August....hint....don't think RC is using them. I didn't think this was an issue, I never had to wait for an elevator . Another thing I keep seeing is book your reservation for the restaurants early , this doesn't always work I tried to book 2.5 months early and was told by RC they couldn't accommodate at party of 10 .... everything was pretty much booked. The RC representative said there is not enough seating in the restaurants for 4000 passengers. So just beware booking early won't always guarantee you seating in the restaurants.

So is Love Connection!! Looks exactly the way you would picture a Caribbean drink...yum!!

thecruiseaholics    8 years ago

I kept drinking frozen toasted almonds by the pool. It's heaven in a cup

Debbie1030    8 years ago

I absolutely loved the oasis can't wait for the anthem I know it's going to be great

SuePitz    8 years ago

Yes, I need my favorite drink, a Love Connection! 🍹

jrmkjm    8 years ago

No, had plenty well served drinks just recently on a very outstanding cruise on Oasis OTS. I just like the sparing. I wish you and Sue many happy cruises...

thecruiseaholics    8 years ago

Sue. Some people aren't happy unless they have something to complain about. I am just happy to spend another day with my family;) people are 10 times more likely to put a negative review in writing than a positive one. And we are not uninformed and inexperienced cruisers. Sound to me like you need a drink;)

SuePitz    8 years ago

We are all entitled to our own opinions and I stand by mine.

jrmkjm    8 years ago

^^^ very uninsightful, uninformed, comments from a very inexperienced cruiser. You've totally missed the main points. If one purchases a premium vacation, one should be reasonably able expect a premium vacation, and not have to "make the best of a bad situation". OP simply indicating for them, the value proposition was out of whack. Many people on that ship agree. You have nothing to compare it to except a 5 day cruise on 10 year old Liberty OTS, so you might listen and learn. Also, people like you need to stop picking on Carnival, because while it's not my cruise line of choice, their fans are fiercely loyal, and if you read their reviews they feel they get what they pay for and don't much care what RCCL cruisers think. Crystal cruisers think we're peasant scum.

SuePitz    8 years ago

If I listened to all the bad reviews I wouldn't have gone. I'm so thankful I didn't. We were on the same cruise and it was the best one yet. We booked again next year. Yes, a few things didn't go as planned, so you deal with it and move on. Big deal the elevators were out, use the stairs, it's good exercise. I was just happy and thankful to be able to afford a cruise vacation like this. If you go with a negative attitude, everything will be bad. I put more weight on the positive reviews than the negative. The cruise is what YOU make it. If you made all your dinner/show reservations prior to boarding you would have no problems at all. If you can't have fun on a ship like Anthem then maybe Carnival is for you, since they say it is the "fun ship".

There needs to be a middle ground. Although I had a great time... Even with my 21 month old. (If you were on August 12th I am sure you saw him). I do think that royal has dropped the ball when it comes to seasoned cruisers. They are not what they used to be and just keep charging higher and higher rates.

dculpepper1    8 years ago

Hit the send button. I feel the issues you mention have been consistent with what others have posted. I think this forum is great because it gives potential cruisers a heads up so they can make a plan b. Also....if you cruise in the summer you are gonna have more kids on the ship. I didn't think it was a 1 star ship, I felt it was a 3 star.

dculpepper1    8 years ago

Nancy I think your review is correct. I feel a lot of issues people keep

bdlguy48    8 years ago

Nancy you are correct, suite guests do get more perks. I have always sailed in Grand Suites and above. I am a solo cruiser and my suites cost me double, about 9,000.00. I don't mind, there are no pockets in a coffin. We pay for our perks, we do not ask for them, they are provided.

jrmkjm    8 years ago

Glad you had a good time, that is.

jrmkjm    8 years ago

Fair enough. I did make the best of it and can't say we had a bad time. Glad you did as well.

thecruiseaholics    8 years ago

I agree that anthem is a money pit for its passengers... I let them know in my review what can be improved...but when life gives you lemons you can make lemonade or be left with sour puss face. Just saying;)

jrmkjm    8 years ago

Grateful my a--. I earned it. RCCL should be more grateful of $150k I've spent so far and money I've yet to spend with them, all of which, with the exception of the money I spent on Anthem, has been money pretty well spent.

Mega ships are fine. Oasis and Allure do a great job handling bigger crowds. As does Freedom class. Quantum class ships are ill-conceived, poorly designed, poorly built, poorly staffed, floating cash registers. OP complaints due to lack of planning/prior research not withstanding, I thank OP for the insightful and accurate review.

That's what happens on the mega ships
