Oban on Steward Island is a sleepy town on the island. This port is a tender ride to a dock and then a long uphill walk into town or there is a shuttle van that will take you complimentary. There are several shore excursion options that looked neat, but honestly, we were so tired by the time we got to this port we just took it easy and walked around the town and then back to the ship.

There is a well maintained trail with an abundance of bird life in this national park on Stewart Island. We did the Golden Bay to Halfmoon Bay via Deep Bay and Peterson Track. We saw many Kaka, a black parrot, who were not afraid of us and also a number of wood pigeons and oyster catchers. The trailhead for the Golden Bay track is right near the tender pier if arriving on Stewart Island from a cruise ship. It is to the right as you leave the pier. Bring plenty of water and stamina as there are no facilities until you arrive at Halfmoon Bay and there are numerous steps up and down on the trail.
