Auckland, New Zealand overview

New Zealand's largest city is draped over seven volcanoes and wrapped around Waitemata Harbour (meaning "sea of sparkling waters" in Maori). Despite its British feel, it is the world's largest Polynesian city. Shop for Polynesian crafts on Queen Street, the main drag. Or from atop Mt. Eden, overlook the "City of Sails," which will host the America's Cup races in 2000.

The best gelato we have ever had was right at the pier. Didn't do a tour. My husband cracked a tooth so Princess made an appointment with a dentist and walked us to the dentist office. Princess is our hero. Great dentist, made sure we got there ok and held the ship until we got back. Very impressed with how Princess took care of us. Lots of shopping in walking distance of the pier.

Terrific city, even in the rain. Ship docks right in the centre, Easy to walk around although there are some slight hills to deal with. Go up the tower, terrific views day or night. Tremendous ambiance emanating from wonderful people. You must take the inexpensive twenty minute ferry across to Devonport; a hidden gem with its village feel, beautiful little shops and cafes. Lovely beaches.

We explored on our own, which was easy to do in Auckland. We visited the museum and the aquarium, and using the hop on/hop off bus was very handy.

A very big city. Great for shopping. We took the ferry over to Devonport for the morning. Had a coffee and a wander around. We didn’t book any excursions but I wish we had gone up to the sky tower to watch the sun go down . I didn’t read about this until too late.
