Tough environment unless you take a tour to the canal.

Colon, Panama unfortunately is not safe to go out on you own. Streets are full of garbage. Opted for the arial tram tour which offered views of monkeys, birds, view of the Gamboa rainforest, visited reserve to view sloths, poisonous frogs, and orchids

This city is in extreme poverty. We saw buildings demolished and small children picking through the rubble. The cruise port did not feel safe after sun down.

Walked out of the terminal, bought a lovely hand-crafted basket from a nice Embera Indian woman and then after looking over the port area, abandoned plans to venture out and got back on the ship. Very crumbling and impoverished looking area beyond the terminal that lacked a feeling of safety big time. Felt sad for the people there.

Generally interesting experience to see the canal. Guide Jorje was very good and we felt that he loves tourists and told us a lot of facts about Panamá. The excursion was not great because the ferry was of 1971 year and it was not quite comfortable. When we embarked it there was no free place and we were at the sun every time, because there was no free place under the tent - it was difficult and tiring as it was 36 centigrades.

Loved the Panama canal Lake tour. Very dangerous port right off of the ship so stay close to the ship and the tour group.

We did the Panama Canal 'engineering' excursion. Basically, we sailed back through the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel Locks on a small boat. A pretty good lunch was included. However, it wasn't worth $172 per person. We saw from a slightly different angle the same thing we saw from Jewel the day before. The lecturer told us the same things we heard the day before on Jewel.

Colon itself is just some shops and restaurants so take a tour to Panama it's worth it.

Got up early in the morning to view the transit through the locks this was very exciting. Took the Two Oceans by Railroad excursion which was disappointing and overpriced. There was nothing to see from the train and much of the time on this excursion was spent on the bus to and from the train. The guide provided some interesting information and there was a stop at a tourist area in Panama City but all in all there was a mismatch between the cost and the quality of this excursion. ($209.00)

It was awful! We could only go to the shops at the dock and were told not to venture past it! After touring the city I completely understand.
