The second largest city in Japan is just that...huge. There is a good metro and this offers the opportunity to travel throughout the city unescorted. On balance better to take a tour to Kyoto perhaps on the "bullet train". The ship berths next to a huge indoor shopping centre complete with an enormous ferris wheel, all of which is an attraction in itself.

Love this port. We did the Kyoto on your own excursion from the ship and was able to see the city at our own pace. Definitely need to come back for a longer visit. ❤️

Plenty to see at Osaka and some itineraries overnight so you can also visit Kyoto. Close by the cruise terminal is a Ferris wheel and outstanding Aquarium. Just a short walk to the Osakako station from where you can go direct to Morinomiya station and walk to Osaka Castle. At entrance to castle park, take the little train ride (Y200) to top bridge to save a lot of walking. Good train system in Osaka can take you close to many other shrines, temples, parks and shopping centres.

We wondered on our own and the local transit will get you where you need to go. Tip buy a suica/icoca/passmo card you won't need to buy tickets for each train.

Unfortunately my travel companion was sick this day so I just went to the shops just off the boat. They were okay. The ferris wheel was at the port as well.

Took the train to Kyoto. This took about an hour and a half, but we were in port till 9:00 p.m. so we had plenty of time. I would probably recommend taking a shore excursion unless you are somewhat experienced with Japan’s trains. Kyoto was beautiful.
