My wife only went to the shops imeadiatly off the pier where the ship was docked. Quite surprized only three shops had names above the entry door. No name, i do not enter. I went into Progresso solo. A half hour there taking pictures and was uneasy in the suroundings so was the first person back to the ship from Progresso. If I am on a ship that docks at progresso, probably won't get off the ship. My opinion is upgrade the town or stop going.

It was DEFINITELY "real Mexico". They are working very hard to "modernize" it. The peddlers and their wares are CONSTANT(as we read about). The "free beach" is where the peddlers were. The restaurant that "allows" you to use their chairs and umbrellas "if you buy a drink", don't tell you "If it a LOUNGE chair, it's 15$".

Think carnival needs a new port of call and take Progreso off its list. Very dirty city and excursions totally built up only to find what you didn’t expect!

This port shows you a lot of what life is like in Mexico...poor. The port area itself was nice with a boardwalk and public beach, but you are bombarded by people trying to sell you stuff the moment you step off the free shuttle. We went to the beach area and sat at a table to get drinks and the bill was $28 for 2 beers and a bottle of water. They charged us $10 to "rent" the table. Of course we weren't told we had to pay for the table until they brought the bill. When I questioned this absurd bill, he said since we only sat there for 20 minutes he "cut us a deal" for $10, they normally charge $20.

Love Progreso. We often go into Merida, but instead went to the beach. It was a great walk, and lunch and massage. Will do the beach again in Progreso!

Not much happening, saw small ruins, missed Cenote because of algae / bird droppings / human yuk. Beach club was pleasant but SMALL.
