Waimea Canyon is great and good opportunity to see south side of island. Waste of time is the Fern Grotto, used to be nice I guess from description, but hurricane a few years back left it pretty unspectacular and you would be better served spending those precious hours doing something else, even if its just going to the beach. Don't purchase the tours through the ship, way overpriced. Other companies offer the same tours for at least half the price. Check out their brochures before boarding the ship. Don't get fooled by the "we'll leave you if something happens on those other tours". Roberts Hawaii offers a guarantee and Polynesian Adventure Tours is partly owned by NCL, so they will not leave you. We used Polynesian Adventure Tours, they were the cheapest, used the same buses, took the same routes as the NCL tours, and were very informative.

Beautiful island...remember, Hawaii beaches are all public. Go to the Marriott and lay out in the grass in front of the beach...within walking distance of the ship!

It was raining as it usually is so the hike we had planned was canceled. We did rent a car and drive north to Hanalei and shopped there. Next time, the canyon.

Better to rent a car and do your own excursions. Note that overnight rental parking is $20.

Helicopter ride was spectacular and the picnic lunch on honilie bay (Puffs place) and tour of wildlife preserve.
