do not do the road to Hana, unless you do it yourself!!! Our driver took 6 1/2 hours to get up to, and then made it down in under 2 hours on wet roads!!! This trip is not for anyone who gets car sick or motion sick, as it has 26 miles of very winding and curving roads!!! Most of the time you move at about 10 miles per hour, because road is extremely narrow and you have cars that are coming the oppisite way and there is only room for 1 vehicle!!!

Not a lot to do in Kahului, but fun sites are within a 15 to 30 minute drive from the port. We drove to Kihei a modern area of Maui the 1st day. The second day we went to Lahaina and Ka'anapali. The former for shopping and lunch at Kimo's, where we had the best Swordfish ever on their lanai on the water. At Ka'anapali we went a luau on the water at the Sheraton, at sunset we watched cliff divers from the beach right next to the luau. What a fabulous day!

You port in the industrial area. Long walk out of the port. We took a Lyft to the Maui brewery. They offer brewery tours for free. The place is amazing. Another short Lyft to the beach for a great sunset.

The port town is not much to see so you have to get out. We rented a car again and drove up to Haleakala. It's wuite a drive but we enjoyed it immensely. Avoiding all the bicyclists on the way down was pretty exciting. They were everywhere. Maui is by far the most "commercial" of the islands so far. If you enjoy that aspect of it, this is for you. If you're not for the crowds and the very American like beach atmosphere, Maui's not for you. We didn't make the road to Hana. After all the hairpin turns on the way up Haleakala we'd had plenty of hairpin turning.

Port was okay, but not attractive. We rented a car for sightseeing purposes. I'm disappointed that not much has improved in Maui since my last visit about 8 years ago.

Do the best of Maui - worth the time. NCL excursions are too costly - comparable tours are offered on shore by several competitors at much better priicing. Shopping is mostly commercial and not island. Stores at the mall are good to pick up macadamia nuts cheaper than at the factory and other staple provisions such as water and lotions etc.

We took two excursions on Maui. The Malikini Crater Snorkel tour and a Whale Watching tour. Both were fantastic, and my family loved them. Great island to visit.
