Bergen is an easily walkable town. Sapphire Princess docked 5 mins walk from Hakkan's Hall, then a couple more mins walk brings you to Bryggen waterfront, another couple more minutes takes you to the small tourist fish market (you can buy seafood here and they cook it up for you). At the side of the fish market is a big tourist information centre with stairs or elevator to the first floor. We bought our Floyen funicular tickets from the machine inside. NOK125 return each. You can't buy one way tickets here, but you can at the ticket booth at the bottom of the funicular stop. Toilets here are charged at NOK10 per person, credit card only. The queues at the funicular was crazy long, halfway down the street. We thought we could bypass thus queue, as we had tickets in hand. However we found 2 separate queues. The left one for purchasing tickets. The right hand queue for prepaid ticket holders. We started waiting at 11am and didn't get on the funicular until midday. One hour of queuing, with no direction from staff. Many in our queue got to the front, only to be told they were in the wrong queue and had to queue again to get tickets in the left queue! The funicular had a number of stops on the way up. If we had known this, we would have embarked a little further up, to avoid the hour long queue. Or rather, we would have walked up and down if we had known how long the queue would be - as we are hikers. At the top/end of the funicular ride, there is a stunning viewing area. We brought binoculars and found it fun to look into Bergen city and beyond. There is a big restaurant, shop and cafe near the funicular stop. Walk 10 mins further, you may encounter 6 goats with GPS necklaces. We saw a number of people cycling down from the big funicular gear statute.

Lovely picturesque town, the main tourist area is easily walkable from the port. We used the funicular railway to Mount Floyen and enjoyed the stunning views, there are trails to walk and goats to pet and plenty of amenities but be warned Norway in general is expensive and these tourist areas are especially so. Bergen is renowned as the wettest city in Norway make sure you take a brolly or waterproof.

Nice city. Took hop on hop off and ride to top of mountain. Did on our own as NCL excursions are two to three times more expensive that doing on own.

The walking tour was very interesting. Not sure the I e Bar is worth it but, if you have never been, it’s OK. The fish market is amazing, if you like that sort of thing which I do. Have a look round the indoor fish market also.

Bergen was the largest of all ports that we visited and the city center is just a short walk away. The fjord cruise was outstanding with spectacular waterfalls and scenery. There are tons of seafood stands to get a bit to eat as you stroll around the marina which the city center is built around.

We went on the market tour with the chef from the ship. It was a walking trip from the ship. Sadly it was raining, not hard, just consistent sprinkles the whole day. Found out it rains 280 days a year here. It's not a large market, but we did get to try whale meat. We did it in the form of whale sausage which was actually quite good. Whale looks and has a mouth feel like liver, which I don't like. Loads of fresh berries and fish. We then took the Funicular (bought our tickets on line ahead of time) and were able to immediately bypass the lineup and get on the Funicular. Pretty ride up to the top. There is a number of areas to view the city from including a glassed in observation deck that juts out. There is a playground for the kids, a lake to hike to, bicycles to rent. We opted to walk down to from the top to the city. There is a troll garden on the pathway down, just a short area from the top. It took us an hour to walk it and it was quite steep. My knee's were not thanking me. It's a beautiful walk, but if you have problems with your knee's not a smart thing to do as the incline is fairly steep. The city hall area is really pretty once we got back down. Tons of shopping. Free wifi at McDonald's...I stood just outside and was able to check my messages. Would loved to have had more time to explore the downtown area.

Diod not like Bergen as much as the other places. We went on the funicular railway which was well worth it but it poured with rain and has to queue for a long time to get back on the ship as there were not enough coaches. We all got soaked to the skin.

The distance from the shuttle bus and walk into town was too far for a lot of people, such as my husband who had a knee replacement a month ago. Especially in the rain. Fortunately we had been before several times so it didn’t matter too much and we had been in a trip but for others it must have been disappointing to be so near but so far.
