Review summary

This was booked as a last minute short break as the cruises we preferred didn’t fit in with our other commitments. Went much as we expected. Met some lovely people at dinner and at the Club aftermath tea. Just a shame about the weather but expect rain in Norway.

Embarkation

5 out of 5
Quickly ushered to the priority check in, super efficient ladies processed paperwork in record time.

Ship experiences

Food and Dining

3 out of 5
Think the food has gone ‘off the boil’ a bit. Not enough vegetables and then not always properly cooked particularly potatoes which were raw in the middle. Enjoyed The Epicurean but food in the Limelight Club needs a rethink. I had a vegetarian strudel for my main there and couldn’t eat it as it was uncooked and inedible. The waiter offered me something else but my husband would have finished his meal by then so decided not to bother.

Onboard Activities

3 out of 5
Enjoyed Gareth Gates in the Limelight but trips were much the same as we had previously done - Flåm railway, glacier, coach trips out, etc. Only trip we did this cruise was to Grieg’s house which was interesting and something different.

Entertainment

3 out of 5
Gareth Gates was good but we didn’t bother with anything else as it all seemed a bit dated and we have seen the shows before.

Service and Staff

4 out of 5
As always the staff are excellent and can’t do enough for you. Having said that some of the shop staff are a bit not exactly rude but almost as if they wished they were somewhere else

Ship Quality

2 out of 5
The ship layout is not the best and the lack of a proper prom deck is the biggest design flaw. Also could something be done about soundproofing? We were several decks up above the theatre and yet we could hear both rehearsals and the performances particularly the rock band. Cleanliness is evident.

Cabin / Stateroom

3 out of 5
General cleanliness and service were good but the sofa needs some attention as when you sit on it you tend to slide forward and have to keep adjusting your position. The shower door kept opening but the cabin steward got it sorted out straightaway. Note for the future. Could the designers round off some of the edges so if you bump into them in rough weather. Also round legs on furniture don’t hurt so much if you stub your toe on then in the night.

Ship tip

Book everything as early as possible for dining options and trips. Leave spa and salon treatments for in port days when they do special deals. Also why is the thermal suite so expensive on this ship?

Ports of call

Bergen, Norway

5 out of 5
The distance from the shuttle bus and walk into town was too far for a lot of people, such as my husband who had a knee replacement a month ago. Especially in the rain. Fortunately we had been before several times so it didn’t matter too much and we had been in a trip but for others it must have been disappointing to be so near but so far.

Disembarkation

4 out of 5
Getting that number of people off a ship is always going to take a time but was not helped by people not going along with what was being asked of them by crew and trying to jump the order while others had waited patiently. Probably the same people who ignore women and children first for lifeboats.
