Easter week made for large crowds. Stood in line for an hour and half b4 the guide told us we had to move on. Lunch was good.

This is where our cruise started, so we spent a few days in Rome. Obviously the Vatican and the Colosseum are worth seeing. The port of Civitavecchia really has nothing to it so it is worth your time to make it out to Rome to see the sights.

Rome is a wonderful destination, of course, but we spent almost all of our time on bus.

We spent three days in Rome (highly recommend) which is easily reached via train to the port. From there you'll see many people looking lost. 99% of them are looking for the port. Share the cost of renting a taxi and make new friends for about 5 Euros to take you there or you can walk about 15 minutes on uneven ground with your luggage.

No way would I spend another 3 hours on a tour bus to visit Rome. Know that the visit is on a Sunday. Getting into the Vatican museum is impossible on a Sunday. If you do not mind visiting more of the sights from the outside only, then go. Instead, we strolled the boardwalk in Civitavecchia. It was charming.

We didn't get to go into Rome on this cruise (public transport workers on strike), so we stayed in Civitavecchia. Nice, quiet, clean town with beaches and good dining

A city full of history. Lots of walking. Not as scenic as the other ports, but still a must. It takes 1 1/2 hrs to ride to Rome, so this makes for a long day.

Ship in port short time, making independent tourism problematic.
