We were there during a very busy holiday - it was packed. Check your calendar for European holidays before booking. I wish we had gone on the "farm visit with a homemade meal" - check out that tour.

We did Rome on your own. I think it was the best choice. Not too expensive and the guide on our bus told us how to do what we wanted to do within the 6 hours we had & gave us a map. We saw Trevi fountain, walked through the coliseum (must) and saw the Sistine chapel. Great time.

We had bad weather on our visit and this meant the hop on open top bus wasn’t the best experience! We ended up soaking wet trying to warm up in a restaurant. Not enough time to see the main tourist sites - with the two hour journey either side of disembarking it left little time for exploring.

Be adventurous and book a tour outside of the cruise line! We did that and it was the absolute BEST experience. It was just four of us in a limo with a private tour guide for 7 hours. Very personal and cheaper than the chartered bus. No huge groups of 30 people all wearing headphones trying to hear the tour guide from the back of the crowd, No waiting in line for entry to the museums.

We did highlights & catacombs tour, very crowded alot of walking and again very long drive. Still was nice. I wish we would have been allowed to stay down in the Catacombs longer. Only did outside of Coleseum but it was still awesome. Be careful everywhere, my son 16 yr got ripped off twice from vendors selling cola and powerade. Both times he was charged 5 euros & they refused to give him change. Our tour guide was willing to go back, but it was quite a hike back..so be carefull.

We stayed in Rome before the cruise. Very crowded city but booked a private driver and saw a lot.

Rome is about 1 1/2 hours away to this takes a lot of your time. Rome is beautiful and we did a private car so get to see most of it but this is an expensive way to go. ( almost $700 between the 4 of us) we did get to see the Pope and got dropped off right at the door for most places. i heard others took trains to city and cabed it locally. do research on options before you go.
