We just caught the local train in to Rome, takes about an hour. Wondered around & saw all the major sites, had a great lunch & headed back to ship. Always love going to Rome, every time you walk around a corner another great monument !

Just finished our trip. 4 adults and 2 seven year olds. We did not do Rome, thankfully. I say thankfully because Florence was not enjoyable due to the uncomfortable buses and massive crowds. Rome would be similar We had booked a trip to the beach in Tarquinia- lido Tarquinia, about 20 min north of the Civitavechia port. The ship canceled our trip due to too few people signing up. We still wanted to go, so we ventured on our own. A bit of a hassle due to the aggressive taxi folks. Eventually we got a driver to take us and drop us off- about 10:30am and he returned at 3:30. 120 euros round trip for 6 of us. I think this could be cheaper if booked in advance (not with the cruise ship). Tarquinia lido is a beach club community. Clubs line the beach and you rent chairs/umbrellas- 36 euros for 4 nice, umbrella loungers. The beach is a black sand which does get hot! The water was warm and had mild-mod waves. Had we known we would have walked a few blocks closer to town and purchased boogie boards for the kids- there were no rentals. The kids, and adults, loved the beach day. Playing in the water, there are playgrounds at the clubs and you can order very reasonably priced food. As far as we could tell we were the only Americans. Mostly Italians on holiday and some other Europeans. However we felt very safe and everyone was friendly- have to seek out young people to communicate in English.

Vatican tour was super busy. So many tours i felt like i really didn’t get to enjoy a single thing. The Rome tour by bus was so pretty. So glad they stopped at the Coliseum!
