It's Rome, what can you say? The Civitavecchia train station is a 7-8 minute walk from the port; we took the train to Roma San Pietro (don't go to Roma Termini) and cabbed in to the Trevi Fountain. The train is 10 euros r/t per person.

We departed from this port and if your departing from here stay in Hotel Traghetto less than a 2 minute walk to where the buses leave from to bring you to the check in terminal. The train to Rome is very very cheap ensure you get your train ticket stamped before getting on and it takes just under an hour to get to Roma termini also the port offers a bus to train station for a couple of euro highly recommend as the walk is doable approx 15-20mins but with luggage and the warm weather when we were there this was well worth it. Civitavecchia has a few nice restaurants and is nice for a stroll around but not much to actually do.

We stayed in Civitavecchia and did not go on the tour to the Rome. And Civitavecchia is actually a nice little town by the sea, that deserves a visit, too. There are some roman ruins, old churches and fortresses and a typical Italian market. Then there is also a very nice promenade by the sea and of course opportunities to get amazing gelato. So If you don't feel like going on a stressful trip to Rome, why not give this underrated town a chance.

There is soooi much to do in Rome, do some research based on the time that your there to make the most of this wonderful city. Don’t miss the Vatican, I would suggest the excursion that starts early in the morning that skips the line. The lines will be unbelievable when you get out!!

We did the optional tour of Highlights of Rome and The Colosseum. This is a very long day, with lots of walking, but saw everything we had always heard of except any Vatican areas. Very well worth our time and money, but very demanding, physically.

Don't feel too nervous about making your own way in. The train station is really easy to navigate into Rome and so much cheaper than booking a ship excursion.

As we had spent plenty of time in Rome previously we just disembarked and went straight to the airport. NCL organizes a transfer from the port which is about an hour away when there isn't traffic. The airport itself is extremely busy and it took us ages to get through passport control. For guests on a cruise stop an excursion is essential.
