Get off the ship as early as possible to enjoy a few minutes of peace before the thousands of tourists descend upon the island. Also, if you like to hike - make sure to hike from Fira to Oia - the views are amazing and it gets you away from the craziness that the cruise ships bring to Santorini.

Waste of money doing the shore tour where they take you by tender to shore and then by bus to the town. You look around and come back. we could have saved a fortune and just gone on the tender ourselves and caught the gondola to the top for about 33% of the price.

If you go in August, just know you may feel your skin frying off of your body. It's a fine stop but hard to decide what to do when there are many options and none of them stand out as especially unique (hiking ended up being our best option).

The island is small enough to do in one day on your own. If you are adventurous, rent a quad (45 Euros) or car (not sure of the price for a car) We stayed for two days and walked up the active volcano (no lava, just steam vents) , with the opporunity to swim in hot springs (18 Euros per person)

We enjoyed the ruins at Akrotiri more than I expected, partly because we had an excellent guide. If you just want to see Oia and Fira, skip the excursion. Cable car up and down, buses run every 30 minutes to/from Oia instead of rushing for the allotted 1 hour and 15 minutes. Bus was 3.60 Euro for 2 people. HAH!
