Samana: Booked Enrico Rosa to serve as tour guide. Excellent choice as he spoke 4 languages and was very congenial. He ended up taking us to the parada that we had researched in the first place, La Manzana, the parade of Antonia Martin. The men walked to the El Limon waterfall and the girls rode horses. TAKE A HORSE!! If they had not given me rubber boots, my shoes would have been ruined by the mud and manure on the trail. The hike is up and down hills and valleys over rocky, muddy terrain. Everyone has to descend a steep rock staircase to get to the bottom of the falls. The meal that Maria prepared for us upon our return was local food and was DELICIOUS. What a pleasure getting to experience their culture. (This parada had excellent modern bathroom facilities) We continued up to Las Terranes Beach and had it pretty much to ourselves.

The poverty here is striking and although some do cruise to see more of the world as it really is, the Discover Semana tour was a sad experience. We wished that for the enjoyment we had gone to spend the day at the all-inclusive resort, which was one of the tours offered. Hard to "vacation" amid such sadness.

We missed our scheduled tour and had to take one from a vender not associated with the ship. Not a good idea. Parts of the island were beautiful, but it was depressing to see the poverty surrounding the docking area.
